Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We did critical reading (finding patterns in the structure of the passage, simplifying the passage, and connecting the questions to the passage). We also worked on sentence completions and we finished with probability, ratios, and proportions. I asked the student to complete an essay, a math section, and a reading section for next week."
"Today, the student and I did an overall review of all 3 sections. We spent the most time on critical reading, since that is what she struggles the most with. We went through critical reading section together, and I discussed strategies with her to answer certain types of questions. We also went through how to answer vocabulary questions in the most effective manner. We then spent time on math, reviewing geometry concepts. We ended the session with reviewing writing questions, and how to address topics that consistently come up such as parallel structure and subject/verb agreement. I also discussed the structure she should use when writing the essay."
"We went over the writing and critical reading sections of the SAT. The student is very strong in those subjects and required only a few additional strategies to improve her performance in those sections. I recommended a few different ways to improve her vocabulary in her everyday life. We then went back over her mathematics because she needs to improve her speed in that section, and I believe the best way to accomplish that is through practice."
"Today we reviewed the math and writing sections of the exam. The student had some concerns with his essay and we went over what he wrote together. We spoke about essay structure and having a clear and coherent thesis. We moved on to math, where he had problems with function questions, which involved graphs or more than one function. There were no concerns from this session."
"The student and I continued our intensive review of the Critical Reading and Writing sections. We reviewed his homework from our last session, discussing passage analysis, methods of breaking up long passages, identifying sentence errors, how to deal with idioms, identifying paragraph errors, and methods of dealing with questions as they occur in the text. His focus and concentration were once again exemplary."
"This was our first session, so we spent part of the time talking generally about goals and broad study strategies and techniques. The student is preparing to take the SAT for the first time, so I wanted to get a baseline of his familiarity and comfort level with each section. We walked through each type of question to gauge his comfort and to introduce specific strategies for each section. I think the most important areas for him to focus on moving forward are building confidence in what he knows, and not getting discouraged when he is initially unsure how to approach a problem. I assigned him a practice test to work on this week so that he can practice the strategies we talked about today, and also so we can gauge what type of independent study schedule is realistic for him."
"The student took another practice test. We talked a little bit about the importance of focus and then went over the questions. We have one more session before she takes the SAT on Saturday."
"We went over the questions from each section of practice #2 from the practice SAT. Overall, the student does well in the reading section. In order to reach her score goal, she needs to increase her score in writing and be consistently getting around 700's for math. We used the same strategies in problem solve in math, including plug in numbers, tricks, graph of perpendicular lines, and absolute value equations. She understands these strategies, and will benefit by more practice and using them consistently. For the writing sections, she is getting faster at identifying sentence errors. She can improve by being more careful and checking for verb/subject agreement. Extra practice: she will work on practice #3 before our next meeting. No concerns."
"Today was our last session before he takes the exam, so we did an overview of all the parts on the test. He did an excellent job with the reading passages and the hard math problems that I threw at him, and he is doing a good job pacing himself for all of the multiple choice sections. Priority for review this week is the essay (he needs to focus on using specific examples, varying his vocabulary, and working under a time crunch) and the identifying errors section. He should also review a few problems of the other sections to keep the strategies and material fresh. Definitely looks good for the test overall!"
"The student and I turned our attention to the multiple choice writing section for this session. We reviewed all three question types and discussed the most common points of grammar, punctuation and usage that appear in improving sentences and identifying sentence errors questions, as well as strategies to move through each of those question types most efficiently. We also examined improving paragraph questions and appropriate techniques to use for that subsection of the writing test. She has a solid grasp of grammar and needed only a few tips and reminders to navigate the trickier questions. Once she knew which traps to look out for she consistently did very well."
"The student and I had our first session today. We spent a little time at the outset discussing his strengths/weaknesses and then jumped right in with work on the critical reading section, which he felt was one of his weaker subject areas. We worked on the first portion of this section: completing sentences. He did very well. His vocabulary is fairly broad. His ability to understand the logic of sentences is very strong, and he was able to use context and process of elimination to provide fairly good guesses to the questions he couldn't answer outright."
"Today the student and I had an excellent session, wherein we continued to work on essay writing skills and reviewed sentence correction. He had gotten very good at formulating an argument and coming up with supporting points. Most encouragingly, he is much improved at sentence correction, doing an excellent job of it in the later portion of this session. I'm convinced that he is going to do much better at the writing section this time around."
