We are taking a more verbal approach with the student's writing. My hope is that if he spends 10-20 minutes practicing on his verbal skills, then proceeds with his writing exercises, he'll perform better with these spontaneous composition activities.

We also learned the differences between a complete subject, simple subject, complete predicate, and simple predicate. After this, I had the student write several paragraphs, focusing on communicating his ideas clearly, and at the end of the session I had him free write for five minutes.

For the next meeting she will have the first draft of the literature review and analysis for review and revisions.

The student came with a draft of the beginning of her essay. There was an improvement in regards to citing sources and backing up opinion with some theory and evidence. I worked with her to plan her argument in a more structured way. We also began covering the basics of APA reference style. She and I agreed that since her essay is due on Monday, the best course of action will be for us to communicate via email - as she drafts, I will review and send back comments. We expect this essay to be a marked improvement from her previous work in this class.

We discussed the underlying issues in his writing and have a goal of helping him achieve better clarity while simplifying technical issues for a readership of about 3,000 individuals with diverse backgrounds. We discussed the following elements in his writing: passive voice, comma happy, and other grammatical elements, and then moved on to editorial practices such as outlining, proofreading, seeing the reader's point of view, and setting a goal of brevity and simplicity.

This student was great! She was engaged and interested in the topic. We spent the session going over her draft of her paper. She had a really great start to the paper, very detailed. We worked on ways to improve her draft, particularly coming up with transitions to make her paper flow more. We decided that for our next session she would work on the edits that I gave her as well her introduction/thesis and her conclusion.
