Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on Math, Reading, and Phonics. She was extremely involved and focused today, and her attitude was excellent. She struggled a bit with number word association, and we used several strategies to help with matching the numbers with their words, namely repetitive practice, guided support, pointing, finding the number words in context, and oral practice. I left her with supplemental activities to reinforce this concept. Additionally, we focused on the letters b, c, and d. She is able to produce the correct phonetic sounds for the consonants in isolation; however, in context, it becomes difficult for her to blend the sounds together to form words. We will continue to work on this concept using guided practice, oral reading, and visual representation."
"The student and I worked on word problems involving the Pythagorean theorem. He did well on the materials. He and I then started reading a new book. He did very well with sounding out new words."
"The student completed a new social studies section about Cairo, Egypt, from a student news reading program. He also wrote two paragraphs for his travel composition. I reviewed his math homework and assigned two new pages. He also read from the book Captains Courageous."
"The student completed a worksheet on integers using a number line. He had to add integers to find the sum. He was able to add negative numbers using a number line. We reviewed multiplication facts, working on 6's. He wrote his multiples of 2's, 3's, 4's, and 5's. We practiced 6's. He was able to write the multiples of 6's and use those to solve multiplication problems (3 digits by 2 digits) and division using 6 as a divisor (with 3 digits in the dividend). We ended the session reviewing his multiplication facts of 6. He did well."
"The student completed his tutoring session aimed at improving his overall academic performance. During the session, he and I primarily focused on further developing his algebra skills. I began by inquiring about his homework. He reported that he didn't have any assignments, but stated that he had an upcoming algebra quiz on matrices and proportions. As a result, he and I worked through a number of relevant questions from the algebra textbook I provided. These items required him to perform matrix addition, subtraction, and scalar multiplication, and to solve a variety of proportion problems. As he solved each item, I pointed out his errors, if necessary, and asked him questions to guide him toward the correct solution. Overall, he performed well on the review and required minimal assistance."
"The student completed the assignment on using z-scores to determine probabilities. She is excellent at calculating the z-scores and finding the areas. She sometimes seemed slightly unsure on how to interpret the areas, so I e-mailed a follow-up study guide to simplify the procedure for calculating the final percentage. The student completed the quiz on finding percentile ranks and quartiles for data sets. Next, she took the last quiz over the normal distribution curve and the applications. She did great! Her instructor created a study guide with answers to help prepare for the test and she feels comfortable completing this independently. This summer school course had quite a bit to it and moved fast. The student was impressive, the way she completed all the work and turned in each assignment and quiz before the due date. She has an amazing work ethic!"
