"Today, we covered more on polynomials. I showed the student how to factor by grouping and how to factor a sum or difference of cubes using the SOAP method. I also showed him how synthetic division of polynomials works. He has a test in a couple of weeks, and we will be working hard together to prepare him for that."
"Today, we covered the Pythagorean theorem and applications since the student has a test on Friday about this topic. We also began reviewing for her final next Thursday by reviewing the semester's vocabulary, simplifying expressions, and solving linear equations. She seems to struggle with attention to detail while working through problems. She knew how to solve all of the problems she saw, yet she got several incorrect because of minor errors that she could not explain. I hope to help her minimize these errors by helping her become familiar with the feeling of confidence that follows double-checking her work. I'd like to intensely review each math topic next week to ensure that she understands all concepts, then spend some time finding the state of relaxed focus that will give her the concentration and mental endurance to make it through a week of testing."
"Today, we covered two ways of solving system of equations: substitution (if the variable is isolated, then we can substitute the expression) and addition (we can manipulate the equations so that when we add the equations together something cancels out). We are one step ahead of the class. The student seemed to understand this concept pretty well. She should get enough practice from her worksheet problems. We used the remainder of the time to go over a practice pre-algebra final."
"Today, we did a systems of equations test review using graphing, elimination, and substitution. We also touched on domain and range of graphs and reviewed identifying slope and y-intercepts and writing equations given 2 points."
"Today, we discussed proportions and the difference between relative and actual values. The student understood most of the concepts upon being taught them. He had some difficulty setting up two variable equations based on a word problem. I will work with him on this so that he is prepared for his Unit 1 quiz. This was a good session."
"Today, we looked over a review sheet that the student had in algebra. It involved layered equations and she had a few options to solve the problem. She did a very good job, and seems to be improving her efficiency with her work. She just needs to work on catching small mistakes as she goes."
