Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Kristina in Walnut Creek, CA
The student and I opened the session with a discussion about the task list I left him with on Saturday. After our discussion, we jumped into editing his science project paper. I first had the student read his paper aloud and we discussed the conclusion and what he could include. The student mad sure each paragraph had an introduction sentence, body sentences and a conclusion sentence.

The student did awesome! We read three short stories and then answered comprehension questions on each. He was able to give me the answer to all but two questions right away, and on the questions he couldn't answer, we went back and reread the appropriate part of the story and he got them the second time. Next, we did the picture-forming exercise where he illustrates a two sentence description, and he did so much better than the last time, just with paying attention to the details of the sentence and keeping his drawing on-task. We ended by doing some math, and he finished two pages. Overall, his focus and productivity are very high today, and I saw several improvements to his skills from previous sessions.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Danita in Walnut Creek, CA
The student and I did not do any reading today, as she and her mom had already done the required reading. Therefore, we were able to do a wide variety of activities. We began by practicing her cursive. I had her write the lowercase letters f-o, y, and z (the last two by her special request) four times each, as well as write the corresponding practice word for each letter twice. Next, I asked her to write me a story consisting of two paragraphs and allowed her to decide the story topic. We did some spelling practice, for which I said 4+ words aloud, had her say the spelling of each word aloud, in response, and then asked that she write the correctly spelled words four times each. We practiced the phonics rules that she was supposed to review for homework by me having her come up with three examples of twenty of the phonics rules (with my assistance). Then lastly, we did some timed speed addition and subtraction exercises. And as I'd noticed that when she was voluntarily misspelling her name when written in cursive (forgetting to include the "n"), I assigned her the homework of writing her name in cursive four times, which also served as a fun activity for her, as she enjoys writing her name in cursive.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Rinalda in Walnut Creek, CA
We started with a warm up game where the student was able to use words correctly in a sentence 90% of the time. We then worked on the silent e. He said the silent e makes the other vowel say its name, which is absolutely correct. We worked on reading words with the short vowel, adding the silent e, rereading the word and understanding it is a different word. We also worked on vowel pairs. He was able to write the correct digraphs most of the time. We finished with a reading using 3rd grade Dolch words which he was able to read and successfully used strategies for unfamiliar words. He had difficulty seeing the rhyming patterns in the text. We finished with a read aloud where I modeled predicting, questioning and making connections. He was on task and focused during our session. He was very proud of his reading log and I am happy to see that he is reading. He responds well to positive reinforcement and earned 15 Skittles today (which made him very happy). He should continue to read just right texts at least 20 minutes a day.
