Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Sandra in Coon Rapids, MN
During our session today we worked on math skills. I have been having the student do a wide variety of math skills to see the areas of urgent need. We have been working on place value, fractions, time, addition, subtraction, and word problems. He has been using pictures to help solve problems and focusing on key words to help with operation. We also read a story about animals with different numbers of legs and worked on a language arts worksheet. He also started subtraction flash cards. He is still in need of math skills instruction but I will do my best to pinpoint the areas of greatest need.

We went over symmetrical objects; identified like objects around her home; and then she drew the objects (homework assignment). We also reviewed some addition and subtraction. For English, we read a poem by Emily Dickinson; she memorized several stanzas and recited them aloud; we discussed meaning and imagery in the poem. We also reviewed several vocabulary words; she spelled them aloud and discussed their meaning. Lastly, we read a chapter in her book for school. All in all, we had a productive session.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Julie in Coon Rapids, MN
To start the session, I helped the student with her math homework. Her homework consisted of drawing specific geometric shapes into boxes with grid lines. This was challenging for her at first. In order to help her, I drew an outline of where the boxes would be over the shapes. Then, I showed her how to fold her paper in half to complete half of the shape at a time. It was still a difficult task, so I helped her hand-over-hand for a few shapes until she was able to complete the task independently. She was very engaged the entire time. For the second half of the session I let her choose three books to read, and we talked about the books throughout the reading. The session ended with sentence dictation to practice spelling, handwriting, and listening skills.

The student and I focused on bar graphs and retelling stories today. With bar graphs, we worked on the concept of a symbol representing a particular number of objects, as well as comparing values using the visual aid of the chart instead of counting individually to compare. In reading, she and I read a book she has already read. Before we started I asked her to retell the story to me, then when she read it we compared what she remembered to what was in the book. Her recall is improving well. We also talked about the pictures in the book, looking for additional information in the images that is left out by the words. Since the story was from Disney's "Frozen", we also talked about the differences between the book and the movie, and which bits she likes better in each.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Danita in Coon Rapids, MN
Today we started by reading from "Pinky and Rex and the New Baby." Afterwards, I had the student answer two questions relating to what we'd just read. I had her stop after she successfully wrote three sentences in response to the second question. As her instructor has emphasized on two separate occasions that he wants attention given to the student's handwriting, I emphasized my desire for her to use all of today's writing assignments to also practice neat handwriting. Lastly, we worked on her homework assignment for today. She went on a field trip to the Metro Atlanta Urban Farm today and was assigned the follow-up task of writing and drawing about things she saw, did, and learned during today's field trip. I broke down the writing task by first helping jog her memory as to some of the things that she saw today. Then we determined how to write that in 1-2 sentences. We moved on to some things she did today, and so on and so forth. Her teacher requested that she write a minimum of five sentences, which we were able to complete during our session, and I left the student with the task of drawing and coloring a picture to correspond to what we'd written.
