Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Reviewed parts of two items submitted prior to our first meeting. Worked on a political piece concerning a bill now in the U.S. Senate. Provided general observations on writing style, language and grammar, and specific guidance on sentence structure."
"The student and I did spelling sentences for the week as well as some reading from her Level 2 storybooks. We played a game while we read in which I would pronounce a word incorrectly and she would correct it. She is very confident reading aloud!"
"Today the student and I worked on his essay for English. His writing skills are improving as well as his brain storming skills. Other areas he will develop over time with practice."
"Student 1 and Student 2 are doing combined two-hour sessions. While working with one hands-on for an hour, the other will be working on a writing assignment. Today, I had both students do a reading comprehension/writing diagnostic at the grade level they will enter in the fall. Student 1 did well and was receptive to advice and feedback. She'll continue to work on vocabulary. She will be alternating between comprehensive essays and SAT essay practice. Student 2 also did well, especially regarding comprehension. He will continue to work on spelling and flow. I will be working primarily on comprehensive essays with him."
"We went over Poe's "Fairy-land", "Hop-Frog," and "The Devil in the Belfry". These pieces are very different than the other ones we discussed. We talked about how that is so and what that means. We also connected them to Hawthorne, Shakespeare, and to fairy tales. For next week, we are going to go over some Caribbean tales, some Native American tales, and the student is going to memorize Blake's "The Tyger.""
"The student and I discussed his practice paper on The Stranger, editing for style and readability. We also discussed his reader response journal entries. We continued to focus on clarity, structure, and elimination of generalities and repetition. His structure is improving due to his focus on detailed outlining prior to writing text. He has largely eliminated conceptual repetition and is becoming more aware of verbal repetition. He will be revising his practice essay as well as the journal entries we reviewed and submitting them to me for final notes."
