Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over a DBQ from an AP exam from a previous year. I went over the specific guidelines and grading criteria that the AP graders use to determine the scores of DBQs each year. We then went about analyzing each document and forming the groupings that are required for DBQ work. We discussed how to analyze documents for bias and techniques for tackling DBQs, which can be difficult at first due to the analytical demands they pose. The student did a good job with it and I look forward to seeing him improve his DBQ techniques as our sessions progress."
"The student is currently working through Chapter 5 in her textbook, which highlights the major diffusive and ethnic religions of the world. We talked a lot about the history of various Christian branches in Europe, followed by the relationship between Europe and the Islamic Empires in the Middle East. We worked on a review of a homework packet of hers and talked briefly about Hinduism and Buddhism, which we agreed to go over more next week."
"Tonight, the student and I began the session by catching up: his class has just finished the Culture lesson and is moving onto to Chapter 5 - Language tomorrow. On questions from Chapter 4 - Cultures, he got 1/3 correct (out of fifteen). At that point, I paused asking questions and we did some discussion about the main concepts of the chapter. He knows them, he could explain them okay, but he was struggling to get the correct answers on multiple-choice questions. We then shifted gears and did some foreshadowing of questions to come from the next two units (Language and Religion) and then we did some review of population and migration. On Pop. and Mig., he got 26/30 correct, which is fantastic."
"We went over vocabulary and context for chapters 4 and 5. The student needs to read the chapters once through, and I think he'll do much better on his exams. I went through most of the vocabulary and questions from his class study guide. At the end of our session, I went over a few tips for dealing with the language of the FRQs that will hopefully help him tomorrow."
"We worked on essay strategies. The student struggled with building a thesis, so I worked with her on a comparative thesis and provided a formula for the continuity and change thesis. Once she became more confident, I began to work out approaches and details for the essay. At the end of our session, she felt more confident, but I advised her to keep studying for details and practice the thesis formula."
"We worked on political geography, the spread of colonialism over time. We discussed three eras of colonialism and three eras of independence movements. We also reviewed previous lessons regarding political geography - states, nations, and what makes a state a state by definition."
