"We finished covering stoichiometry today. The student felt that she had difficulty with balancing equations. I gave her about 20 practice problems which she was able to work through very well on her own after initial explanation."
"Today, the student asked for help on his weekend homework. This week, it covered calculating mass percents of compounds given different fragments of information. He did quite well working through the problems. I will be writing up a practice problem set for him to work on throughout the next week. There were a few problems that required knowledge of nomenclature rules. He did very well on these. I took a slightly different approach to this session and really pushed for him to logically think his way through each problem having only one or two written examples to go by. He seemed to do very well with this approach and dealt with each successive problem with more confidence."
"This was a very exciting week for me! I am always excited to explore new topics with the student and chemistry. We began by modeling various organic, covalently bonded molecules and how to estimate their structure based on names or chemical formulas. We utilized the periodic table and the octet rule. This coming week the student will be beginning the unit of resonance! Resonance is one of my favorite o-chem topics. We discussed how to estimate where double bonds will form, where the charged functional groups will appear, and how to model the multiple structures. We also discussed extended conjugated systems. I will be preparing a mini-quiz for the student for our next session on resonance."
"In today's session, we went over the student's most recent test, then completed a homework assignment on acids and bases, and equilibrium. She did better on this test than she did last time. With the newer material, it is important that the student studies on her own, and put quite a few hours in with it. Equilibrium and acids/bases can be tricky and usually questions are more involved, so it is important that she practices the concepts on her own. We are going to meet on Monday to review this material again before her exam."
"Since the student did not have a basic understanding of the material that she went over since the beginning of the course, we mainly established the basic knowledge for organic chemistry. Particularly we focused on small things such as structural notations along with nomenclature. By assuring that she understood these topics by the end of today's session, she felt more confident and better prepared for the material she covered this week along with any of the upcoming ones as well."
"Student had a test earlier today and we discussed how the test went. Student wanted to go over new material and we did problems with equilibrium ICE tables. Student is fine with the chemistry concepts and made mistakes on the algebra. She needs to practice her algebra skills. I suggested that she work on one type of these problems per day so she feels comfortable with the algebra. Student will forward me the test to look over if there are any questions she wants to review next session."
