Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today was our first session together so we spent the first five minutes going over what she is struggling with on her current coursework as well as what she hopes to achieve from our sessions. She has a good amount of reference material to work with including notes, graded quizzes, and homework as well as some tutorials from her teacher. This gives me a lot to work with so that I can see progressively how she is preforming on each topic and what we should cover. She has a great attitude and is very open to working to achieve the high grade that she wants in her Physics course. She has an upcoming cumulative exam on work, energy, and momentum, so we reviewed some basic conceptual knowledge that she should have by this point in the semester. Although physics has foundations in mathematics, it is a highly conceptual subject that requires full understanding of the "how's" and "why's". As we were going over her quiz and homework problems, I asked her conceptual questions as to how she arrived at her answer and what would have in a hypothetical situation if we were to alter the problem in some way. This, I believe, is a great way to test knowledge of all aspects of a specific topic, not just whether or not they can plug numbers into a given equation. She was able to determine what she needs help on conceptually which makes it easier to have effective sessions and work towards getting her grade up to an A. Next week, we will continue our review of older topics to prepare her gradually for her AP exam in May as well as cover the concepts of each section and their applications in mathematical, or everyday, situations."
"The student and I continued her review problems for her upcoming exam. There were a lot of problems that were very densely packed with information. The student did quite well. I hope she will be able to review the questions and consider the details of what we talked about, because she is clearly bright enough to take it in given a reasonable amount of time to practice."
"Today we reviewed for the first exam. We covered Coulomb forces, Gauss' law, electric field and electric potential. I think with some more practice the student will perform well on the exam. After doing one practice test, the second test came much easier and she was able to remember the relevant equations more easily."
"Good session, simpler than our first. A bit less high-flying conceptually. We covered integument, epithelium, a brief look at histology and noticed that we could use a prefix/suffix thesaurus for the future. The student seems overall more confident in the material at this point."
"Great first session. The student worked on the homework problems assigned to him by his professor. He is really capable so far of solving the problems they are covering and only needed minimal help with the concepts."
"Great student, he listened well and acted appropriately and had enthusiasm. We went over a worksheet his teacher provided and he did well. We covered basic stoichiometry, and some problems regarding molarity. He struggled a bit with the limiting reactants part, but after the second try he seemed to be getting more confident dealing with them."
