Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session with the student we went over her reading and writing scores, which were good; she met both and exceeded in some areas. We went through her assigned homework and because she only had a few days before we met again I only assigned her a short prompt that could be addressed in a single paragraph, a response to Orwell's "Shooting and Elephant" that we had gone through together."
"She is working on her summer school assignment. Together, we found more examples of prompts for social media comments and counter-comments. We discussed what kinds of comments her character can make and what other characters can comment back and forth."
"The student began listing ideas for his comic book character. After brainstorming his ideas, I assisted him with the ideas he should expand upon. He began to write more details about the character's personality and power abilities. Once he completed this task, I went through his writing to edit and give feedback. There were a few sentences that were vague, so as a part of his homework assignment, I decided to have him clear up the sentences by adding more detail. I also suggested that he does his brainstorming before we meet because it takes him a while to get started writing."
"Today the student and I did an edit and revision on a six-paragraph essay class assignment. She completed a free-writing exercise as well. For homework, she is to view the assigned video and we will gauge her comprehension skills."
"The student continued working on her admissions essay, editing it for grammar and spelling, as well as making sure it included everything she wanted to get across. We also worked on a bit of math, reviewing the formula for slope and how to graph a y+mx+b equation."
"She and I worked on her English homework where she had to identify various aspects of a short story, such as the rising action, climax, resolution, symbols, and POV, etc. I thoroughly explained the differences to her and gave her tips for how to figure out where they are in a story (looking for key words/sentiments, etc.). I think that guiding her through the worksheet helped her better understand the components of a story."
"In this meeting, we covered the expectations of the parents and the student. We also covered the problems that the student was facing with his writing and comprehension. We mapped out a plan on what to cover during these tutoring sessions so that his learning is maximized and what areas we need to work on to improve his skills and get him on the right reading level."
"During this session, the student and I worked on a social studies writing assignment wherein he had to reflect upon a cartoon that he drew. He and I typed an explanation of his cartoon which detailed why he felt that his subject was an important topic. He and I were able to write about the message of his cartoon, in addition to two different parts of the drawing that helped get his message across. He and I were also able to analyze one device that helped get his message across."
"The student and I worked on a writing assignment. I prepared a writing assignment (a compare and contrast writing task) that he completed. He did very well."
"Today the student and I worked on the paper he has due in MLA format for writing class. We finished the draft and he was responsible for typing it according to MLA format and citing it properly. He was also responsible for his math homework today. As per my instructions he was to finish these assignments and send me the completed work."
"The student and I practiced his storytelling a few more times. In certain parts of his passage, he skips sentences and the story loses its cohesiveness. He and I also completed his homework assignment, which focused on a abstract understanding of his multiplication tables, volume, and geometric shapes."
"I helped him write answers to study questions for a social studies test. I also worked with him to develop the habit of checking his answers with the textbook to make sure his facts were correct."
