Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session was for the student only and to only focus on math. First we started with some probability practice problems and graded her latest SAT test. We then covered a few new key strategies for the math section including what kind of answers to look for or eliminate based on the question difficulty, when to take advantage of having a calculator, the pacing principle of how many raw points she needs to get to reach her goal, and some math shortcuts to cut down on time. We then reviewed some material and finished by going over her math sections from the test along with probabilities of areas, arc areas and arc lengths, and some algebra."
"The student and I reviewed product and quotient rule for her homework assignment. She seemed to get it and only really struggled when the algebra was difficult."
"Finished up her linear programming project by helping her do the matrices, graphs, and systems of equations in the write up. Then did some more SAT math prep, and worked on some shortcuts for how to do a problem faster and how to recognize certain patterns in problems."
"The student and I reviewed for her Chemistry test tomorrow. We went over her review sheet and an old quiz, which covered percent composition, stoichiometric conversions, balancing equations, and predicting products."
"I continued to work with the student on the Critical Reading portion of the SAT. The following strategies were discussed. First, he should read the passage, taking notes as he reads. Second, he should predict his answer before looking at the answer choices. Third, he should find specific evidence for his answer in the passage."
"Reviewed student's questions in mathematics. Gave the student vocabulary words and roots to study for test in one week. Assessed student's ability in mathematics and created lesson plan for upcoming sessions. Discussed fraction to decimal and percent conversions and devised a plan for studying conversions. Introduced Quantitative Reasoning question style to student. Introduced vocabulary and reading comprehension style questions to student."
"The student and I went through some of the materials he is working on in class. I specifically focused on definition of verbs and other vocabulary. I also introduced the topic of past perfect tense, past imperfect tense, and future tense. I'm going to slowly introduce past perfect tense so the student and I can practice it a lot before it comes up in class."
"Completed math practice test in order to monitor test-taking practices and timing issues. Improvement over diagnostic test is 17%. Additional work in problem solving needed, as well as continued practice doing math without a calculator. Additional homework assigned as none completed over last week and a half."
"Worked on reviewing some math concepts, as well as identifying specific math concepts to practice in future sessions, using a list provided by a test prep book. Talked about writing section and practiced planning an essay on three different prompts, crafting a thesis statement, planning examples by looking at pros and cons to each side of an argument. Also did some work on the English section, figuring out which questions caused the most difficulty. Reviewed some science briefly."
"Worked with the student on spelling for a short time, then read together for the remainder of the lesson. Also discussed different topics and themes of the book he is reading. He seems to be getting more and more interested in it."
"Today the student was feeling a bit under the weather, so we tried to take it easy and review any and all important material for upcoming tests. We spent a good deal of time on Spanish, reviewing vocabulary and structure. We also spent a lot of time reviewing science, as he has an upcoming cell exam. I'm confident he'll be prepped for both!"
"Both sessions went well and mostly addressed geometry concepts. The student is very good at visualizing 3-D shapes which is coming in handy for her a lot during this unit. I do believe that she is improving. Keep up the good work!"
