Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed the sections he had done for homework. We learned the geometry concepts that will be covered on the test and practiced some problems. Then we went over a few English passages together and talked about tips. He seems to be showing improvement in the English section but still needs work on the reading section."
"On Wednesday, we went over a practice math test in her ACT book. She did well on it. I gave her a practice science and reading to do before our next session and also some more practice math."
"We went over general ACT strategies and then finished one full English section and carefully reviewed all of her errors and everything she wasn't 100% sure of. We started the math section, too. For homework the student will complete another English section."
"The student completed the reading section I'd asked him to do. Out of 20 questions he only missed 2. This is a huge improvement. We did talk about how endurance may become an issue. I asked him to do a whole reading section in one sitting to see how that affected his performance."
"The student and I began our session by talking about the ACT essay. We looked at a sample essay prompt and discussed how he could go about outlining his response. We looked at a sample essay for another prompt that had scored well to see an example of what essay graders look for. After this, we worked on practice questions from the ACT English section. We also worked on a reading passage. For next session, he will complete one English section of the ACT and a practice essay."
"The student did an English, Reading and Science section before our session today. He did very well on Science. He had trouble with pacing himself with Reading, finishing only two out of the four passages in the time allotted. We went over a few different time management strategies that could work for him. We also went over the problems he got wrong in Science, finished the passages he hadn't done in Reading, and went over most of the problems he missed in English. I want him to do a full-length test simulating actual test conditions and timing himself for each passage so that he finishes more problems in the time given."
"Reviewed English & start of Math sections the student had completed as homework. He continues to excel in the English and showed some improvement on the more difficult questions at the end of the section. Also discussed grading criteria and strategy for essay, and practiced planning an outline for a sample essay prompt. Finished with a few Science passages, which he did very well on. Assigned full, timed Reading test for homework to see if he can apply the strategies covered so far to get through all four passages in time."
"This session we mostly focused on Math. He had completed 10 problems for extra practice, and we reviewed those problems as well as worked through the remainder of the practice test. We discussed how to improve his timing on the science section. He completed a 5 minute timed section, and as able to get through 5/6 questions. His accuracy for the science questions though is still good. We will continue to work on this section. He has 3 science sections for extra practice this week. We didn't discuses English or reading this session, but he has 2 sections of each for extra practice this week."
"During our session we spent some time going over how the student's last ACT went, what he was comfortable with, and what he was concerned about. He mentioned that he was concerned about his reading, time management, and the harder math questions. We then spent the remainder of the time going through Sample Pieces for each subject to see where he was, both printed from the ACT website and from his ACT prep book. In reading, we worked on looking at the questions first, finding the climax of the story, and knowing the antecedents. In math we worked on writing word problems as equations as well as working on some geometry problems. In Science we worked on reading the questions first, having consistency in our answers, and looking at specific word choice. In English we worked on looking for prepositions and fragments to give us clues. Before next session, he will be do a practice test from the reading section."
"In this session we worked on ACT English and ACT Reading. For the English section we discussed proper punctuation usage (especially colons and semicolons) as well as practicing the variety of questions that will appear on the test. For the reading section we talked about the different types of questions and strategies for answering them. We also covered general strategies for working efficiently on the Reading section and on the ACT in general and practiced reading different types of passages that will be on the ACT."
"Great first session with the student. We mainly covered the math section of the ACT. She practiced doing timed problems, and we identified areas to work on - geometric focus and careful reading of the problems."
"We covered the math and reading sections this session. The student has a great handle on the academic concepts in both sections. She needed a little help decoding some of the word problems and finding faster strategies for certain problems (avoiding guess-and-check strategies). Her reading comprehension is wonderful, but her reading pace is quite slow. We practiced speed reading and pre-reading questions in the reading section. I assigned her a few math problems to review old concepts and one reading passage from the ACT book."
