Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, we covered two homework assignments that involved solving quadratic equations using the complete the square technique. At first, the student struggled the most in her understanding of squaring and taking the square root of a number. However, she had a great attitude and kept persisting by using a chart of common square roots that we created together. I encouraged her to take notes in class and staple those notes to the handouts received in class to help her understand the material."
"During this session, we focused on simplifying complex fractions; converting fractions to decimals; finding the volume of spheres, pyramids, rectangles, and cylinders; and memorizing all of the volume formulas for an upcoming test. The student struggled the most with complex fractions because the idea of treating the fractions in the equation as regular numbers confused her. She was still incredibly enthusiastic to keep trying and eventually ended the session knowing how to successfully complete the strategies we covered. For the complex fractions specifically, I gave her a couple of basic formulas to remember how to approach the problem. A big win from the session was seeing how comfortable she became with the volume formulas and how to apply them, as well as her finally understanding the multiplication and division aspects of complex fractions."
"During this session, we focused primarily on review problems for the student's upcoming test on sampling methods and experimental designs. We went through the homework problems from her textbook and then used practice problems online. Overall, this session went very well, and she certainly seems to have a much better grasp of the topics."
"During this session, we looked at topics from unit 3 of the student's online Algebra 2 class. Some of these topics included completing the square and the quadratic formula. Completing the square was a bit of a more challenging topic, while the quadratic formula is easier due to the use of a formula. She did very well on her assignments for this session."
"During this session, we primarily focused on the 3, 4, and 5 times tables, while also working on some spelling. I started by testing the student on her spelling words for this week. Fortunately, she only got two wrong, and then she wrote them out multiple times to remember the correct spelling. Then, we reviewed the 3 times table, which she answered faster than in previous sessions. Next, we discussed the 4 and 5 times tables. She struggled with these a bit more and had difficulty figuring out the answers to the 4 times problems in particular, even when counting on her fingers. For future sessions, I plan to continue working on the times tablesespecially 4so that she can practice and improve on them."
"During this session, we reviewed a number of problems involving percentages to review the student's past work and prepare her for her test next week. We reviewed finding the percentage of a number, identifying the whole when given a percentage, sales tax, discounts, percent increase/decrease, percents of totals, and converting fractions to decimals to percents. She did very well; she is converting between fractions, decimals, and percents fluently.
We continue to work on word problems routinely, as she has the concepts and can calculate fluently, but she occasionally gets stuck on how to start word problems. However, she has made substantial improvement with word problems since our first session."
