"The student and I went over last week's summative assessment to figure out why she got some answers incorrect. We discussed how to analyze multiple choice questions to figure out what is a good answer vs what's the best answer. We also went over some tricks on how to figure out which answer is the best answer by turning a question into a statement of fact. That seemed to really resonate with her. We also prepared for her summative the next day and wrote some of the tricks down so she could review them before her quiz. We read Animal Farm and went over some vocabulary and annotating tricks."
"We reviewed the themes of "Of Mice and Men" and worked on short-answer questions and an outline for an essay."
"The student kept up with her assigned reading and completed the required quiz. She demonstrated adequate comprehension of the book. In this session, I had her continue reading Harry Potter, stopping her along the way to ask comprehension questions and to have her sound out difficult words. It would be good for her to slow down when she comes across unfamiliar words, and to consciously attempt to break them down into syllables / root words. Several times during our session this process enabled her to recognize words that she had trouble with at first. After reading for about an hour, she asked if I would help her with a math problem. So we spent the remainder of our time working on percentages. I've assigned her homework for next week: 5 chapters in her book, with a summary of each, in addition to 3 vocabulary words per chapter which she is to define and break into syllables."
