"I used this meeting to finish our initial work on the ACT English section. We continued from last time reviewing specific principles of grammar and rhetoric tested: pronouns, sentence construction, and idiom/fluency. The student was able to indicate understanding of each in the abstract and in context; we proceeded to guided practice and then a timed assessment. No issues with time management observed; the student had extra time for self-checking and made use of it. Accuracy is high, but could be improved with some further practice of the "editorial" rhetoric questions. As with math, we're above benchmark for the subject, with achievable room for improvement. We decided to move to twice-weekly meetings."
"The student and I went over SAT essay writing and the questions he got wrong on a practice test. The great news is that he has gone from a previous score of 1300 to a score of 1920. Since he is aiming for 2000, this shows it's well within his reach. Most of the problems he got wrong were extremely difficult, and he wisely didn't answer some serious time draining problems. We went over test-taking strategy, and using elimination to probabilistically raise your score by eliminating two answers. We're coming down to the wire but he has vastly improved his speed, facility, and test-taking strategies. With the time remaining we'll focus on high-yield areas. He still has flashcards and worksheets to go through for further review."
"We covered the SAT essay today. I gave him a prompt, and we worked on putting a thesis, topic sentences, and solid examples together. His writing is decent, and he was able to take a solid stance on the prompt and write a good paragraph. We talked through transitions. I gave him another prompt as an assignment, and told him to create his own e-mail. We will keep working on test taking skills, and essay writing on Monday."
