Statistics Tutoring review by Victoria in Woodbury, MN
Last night we went over the bootstrap question, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing. For the bootstrap question, the student should determine the critical values for a normal distribution. For confidence intervals, her final answer should be a sentence rather than just an interval. This morning we discussed how to calculate the power of a test.

Today, we looked at using the student's t distribution when sigma is not given. This included using sample size to identify degrees of freedom and using d.f. and confidence level to figure out margin of error and the range for mu. We then looked at proportions and how to find p-hat and q-hat. We saw how the process for proportions was similar to finding the z critical value. We ended by doing some problems, and she understood them. She will practice some more problems from her textbook before her test next week.

Today, we went through section 11 of the student's course, specifically focusing on hypothesis testing (null vs alternative) and type 1/type 2 errors. We then took his quiz together and got a 7/10, but we were able to review the content and figure out what was missed on the remaining 3 questions.

We covered the last of the student's material, which was correlation, regression, and hypothesis testing for correlations. It's clear to me that she is grasping the material. Her professor suggested she focus on making sure she's able to identify problem types to apply the correct analytical method. We will focus on that as well as the practice exams in the next few sessions.

The student has one more quiz and a final exam before his course ends. He is determined to pass the class. He scanned and emailed me copies of two of his exams. We started going over the questions to figure out exactly where he's losing points. Like many students, he's rushing through calculations and missing easy points. We went back over types of tests, formulas, calculations, setting up hypotheses and data tables and how and when to reject or accept a null hypothesis. We agreed on a set of homework problems he is going to solve for our next meeting.

The student and I did some quick pre-final mop-up review of her knowledge of confidence intervals, selecting critical values and reporting p-values. I coached her on using the statistical functions of her calculator.
