Session Summaries by Statistics Tutors

Statistics Tutoring review by Joseph in Cranston, RI
The student is improving in his ability to understand the concepts of probability. He has difficulty with the non literal translations of probability (e.g., 37% report weight loss versus a coin flip). This has improved with a session dedicated to these types of questions, but when a homework problem is presented with similar information, he still requires some assistance to answer the question. We will continue to go over these problem types until he has mastered them.

Statistics Tutoring review by Victoria in Cranston, RI
We worked on a few practice problems I found online for hypothesis tests. One question required the z-test, while the other question used the t-test. I'm going to look up the student's specific equation for t-statistics hypothesis tests for our next session. She did very will with constructing the null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis, determining the test statistic, and determining whether to use the z or t test. She struggled a bit with the rejection level and how to apply each test, and we will talk about that more on Tuesday.

Statistics Tutoring review by Remington in Cranston, RI
For today, we reviewed collinearity among explanatory variables. We talked about how highly-correlated explanatory variables can lead to inaccurate multiple regression analyses as well as how to they can underemphasize the effect of single variables on their own. We also discussed how to remedy this effect by collapsing the variables into a single, new variable or by simply removing one altogether.

We went over the review to help the student before he took the test. He was concerned about how to use z-tables to generate probability values for hypothesis tests and confidence intervals but we spent time on that as well.

Statistics Tutoring review by Francis in Cranston, RI
We reviewed the student's homework on hypothesis testing, and then discussed the concepts of simple linear regression. We estimated a model, and walked through the resulting summary statistics and ANOVA table.

Statistics Tutoring review by Jan in Cranston, RI
The work the student wanted to work on today involved calculating probabilities. We went over the formulas for simple probabilities as well as conditional ones. She had an assignment to work on that she was able to complete. Overall, she was consistently excellent with the math. She struggled with the logic of the problems at first but with practice seemed to understand and be comfortable with most of the problems.
