Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We were able to complete all the worksheets and the vocabulary guide during our session. The student really enjoys genetics and Punnett squares which really shows in her understanding of the subject. She is also doing better at making sure her homework is always turned in on time, which is helping her grade as well."
"The student is just starting a new chapter in her class and the chapter is all about photosynthesis. She already had a really great understanding of photosynthesis (her teacher was even making copies of her notes to give to the whole class). This allowed us to spend our time going over the more complex details of photosynthesis. We broke down the steps in the light dependent reaction and the Calvin cycle. We talked about how NADPH and ATP produced by the light dependent cycle are necessary for the carbon cycle. The student knew all the inputs and outputs of photosynthesis and we were also able to discuss why ATP is so important and how it carries energy. This chapter also tied together nicely with her previous chapter on diffusion and transport in cells."
"We covered the Hardy-Weinberg Principle and how to conduct a Chi Square Test. The student was struggling at first with getting started, but once we discussed how to find the allele frequency using the number of recessive phenotypes in the population, he was able to successfully solve for the number of homozygous and heterozygous dominant in the population, as well as know the p and q allele frequencies. I left the student to solve one last problem to practice with, to find the frequency of albinism from state of choice. In the previous session, we covered the concepts surrounding genetic engineering and the creation of vaccines. Additionally, we reviewed the process of cloning and mutations that are common in the molecular level."
"This past Friday, I met with the student for help with high school Pre-AP Biology. We first went over concepts in cell biology, specifically subcellular organelles and their function. We went over details especially the plasma membrane along with chemical composition. Lastly, I made a point to illustrate how everything is connected in biological systems. Together, we completed her homework and study sheets. She is a bright student that ask great questions and is quick to learn! Her strength is conversing through the problem at hand. My recommendations is that leading up to the quiz/test this week that she spend time memorizing the material. Perhaps flashcards could help. I am always available to help as well!"
"Today we went over the student's lab results for his Surface Area : Volume ratio lab and discussed the related concepts. We also discussed diffusion and osmosis. He had already read about osmosis, and I was impressed with his understanding of the concept."
"Today, the student had a goal of completing her extra credit assignment on biology chapter 7, concerning cells. She came into the session very focused and immediately got to work. She had already completed most of the short-answer questions, and wanted help clarifying the expectations for the lengthier questions. For instance, we began by clarifying the types of diagrams and explanations needed for a question concerning yeast cells and microscopy. Additionally, there were a few times where she simply needed guidance as to where to look in the text for a specific answer. Once guided, she was easily able to locate the information. For most of the time, she worked independently, and we checked in periodically throughout the session. She continues to be a tenacious worker with a great attitude. I look forward to seeing the results of her re-submitted lab and of her extra credit!"
