Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over the basic equation for a line, how to graph it, and how to manipulate it. The more I work with the student, the easier it seems for him to understand the material. He needs plenty of practice, so during our sessions, I make sure to give him as many examples as possible. His attitude towards working with math has improved dramatically. Not many students enjoy math, but when working together, we make the best out of it. The only thing he struggles with is memory when it comes to remembering the steps for how to complete certain problems. Through hours of practice, he has improved on this front. Overall, he says that our sessions help him dramatically during class and for homework."
"We went over the concept of valence electrons, how to read a periodic table, chemical bonds, electron dot structure, and chemical formulas. The student seems to grasp the concept, but he still needs to memorize chemical symbols. During our next session, I will give him work to help him memorize chemical symbols."
"We went over the entire packet the student's teacher had given her, including determining if a number set is a relation or a function, creating a function from a word problem, and using the vertical line test."
"We went over the first half of the student's practice test. Each question was followed by a supplementary lesson on the topic to jog his memory. We covered systems of equations, working with linear equations, factoring quadratics, and working with quadratics in general. I gave him additional homework in setting up linear systems. I sense that he is very anxious when it comes to word problems, so I think a lot of practice will really help him become more comfortable when he sees them."
"We went over the piecewise function HW packet that was sent to me previously. Overall, it was a good introductory session and will get better as we build on our sessions together. The student was mostly struggling with applying concepts to the right situations. She sometimes tries to get to the answer quickly, and just taking a quick second to decide on what to do next will help a lot. She is extremely positive and easy to work with, so I am positive she will be successful with the right tutoring and with the continued effort. For the future, it would be best if she comes with questions from previous HW assignments or old quizzes."
"We went over the PSAT practice test that the student took since our last session. We reviewed some strategies for the math section, namely plugging in answer values. On the Reading section, he had trouble with main idea, support, and context, so we reviewed those questions and spent some time doing more examples on those topics. We also quickly reviewed linking words and phrases and homonyms for the Writing section. He is doing well overall. He needs to work on the Reading section more than the other sections. I think it would benefit him if he would step back from the passages and ask himself, "what is the main idea of the passage and of each paragraph, and what is the purpose of the passage or why did the author write it?" Next time, I will work with him on mapping passages."
