Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I checked with his teacher on assignments to work on. He worked on math word problems from Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4 from a textbook related to careers. He wants to use the calculator, but I had him show the work. We then reviewed math multiplication facts."
"We reviewed graphing linear and nonlinear functions, determining the vectors, y and x intercepts of parabolas. The student had a good understanding of all concepts covered by the time the tutoring session was complete. He was left with 6 additional practice problems from his textbook for review."
"The student and I worked on fractions. We reviewed all the key steps in adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions reinforcing the step by step process of when to find LCM and GCF. I am really big on there being a consistent set of steps to avoid mistakes with fractions. The student honestly does well, and I make it my priority to give a lot of specific positive reinforcement every time he does a step well. It might seem a little corny but since he plays lacrosse I try to find connections between the mindset he needs in sports (What does your coach say to the team? What do you say to yourself?) and how relevant the same approach is to academics too. We did a quick preview of his next lesson as well - repeated exposure never hurt and from past experience as a teacher, previewing really helps build confidence for kids."
"We went over 3D shapes. The student has been learning geometry in class, so we talked a bit about those topics. He's also been watching various math videos online, so he showed me them (he was very enthusiastic about them!) and we talked about some concepts mentioned in the video."
"The student and I today started working on fractions. We did introduction of what a fraction is and started working on the different types of fractions, including addiction and subtraction. We also did multiplication tests at the end, and he has rapidly improved with his facts over the last few weeks."
"I spent today discussing multiple regression because that is what will be on her final exam. We talked about how to read all of the tables when you run a multiple regression in SPSS. I talked to her about types of questions that can be asked about each table and how the tables correspond with the regression equation."
