Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered techniques for the sentence completion section and passage-based reading. We will practice more on vocabulary and with sentence completion comprehension. I assigned the student an SAT essay and vocabulary words for 2 weeks from now."
"We went through another practice test where the student did exceedingly well; he only missed a total of 3-4 on the writing section out of 49, correlating to a score of anywhere between 700-800, depending on his essay. His reading score was approximately 650-750, but this was a particularly more difficult set of passages. With our last session, we should be able to weed out any remaining discrepancies in question specificity."
"Today we worked on essay writing. We worked on strategies for approaching the essay including timing, structure, and content. The student wrote one complete essay during the session. She did well on her essay. We also reviewed vocabulary at the beginning of the session. I was happy to see that she knew most of the words this session."
"Great session. We went over a lot of math and did practice problems. Rehearsed question-answering strategies in preparation for taking another practice test. The student will take a practice test tomorrow to track progress."
"Today we worked on the student's essay, and I assigned him a full-length timed one to write by next week. I think he will be ready for another full-length practice test soon. I also helped him register for his exam date."
"The student and I worked on a set of very difficult math problems. I like working through this set with students for two reasons: first, I think it is always helpful to work on problems that might be a little more difficult than what will be seen on the actual test. Secondly, it is a great platform for discussing both mathematical concepts and test-taking strategies. He did very well on these questions. I was impressed by how he seemed to have a greater understanding of what was being asked in the questions and with how he approached getting to the correct answer. I will be working through the end of these questions with him on Tuesday, as he has his first test coming up in a week. We will then discuss some strategies for the day of."
"We covered all the topics from the document Student 1 gave me. Student 2 should take his notes and turn them into flashcards. He should then review all the material, particularly the Amendments and the Preamble."
"The student and I finished our sessions today, as she will be having the ISEE on Saturday. She had completed the reading comprehension section in the book and only had 3 incorrect. In the synonyms, she only had 1 wrong, which was also the case in the math sections. She wanted to review the Roman numerals in the math section and the strategy of backsolving. I also briefly went over some of the strategies for each section, told her to relax on Friday, not to stress, and allow herself time on Saturday morning for a good breakfast and a chance to read something before she heads for the test. She has had several friends already take the test and has a good idea of what to expect. I have no doubt that she will do very well. It has been a pleasure working with her."
"Today, we focused more on the verbal section since we have not done so yet. I focused on words with multiple meanings, as she was challenged by that section in the diagnostic. We discussed strategies to narrow down and eliminate poor choices. We also discussed how the synonyms are not always perfect, but she needs to find the "best" answer given. We also reviewed roots, prefixes, and suffixes and practiced using those as clues and getting to the right answer even when she did not know the original word. We also made a vocabulary list, and I emailed her several ISEE vocab quizzes. We also reviewed and practiced right triangle/Pythagorean Theorem questions as well."
"I really enjoyed working with the student. We talked about the format of the SAT. We then went over basic mathematics principles for the math portion and moved into Algebra. For the last 45 minutes, we went over practice questions. She is a quick study who asks pertinent questions. I asked her to try to do a practice SAT math test and send me the results before our next session."
"This session with the student went very well. We worked on ACT tips and tricks for English and Science. I am going to give him related homework to do before our next session. I think, with some practice, he could score very high on the science section. He has an aptitude for this section. Next session, we are going to go over tips and tricks for the reading and math sections."
"Today, we worked on motion in one and two dimensions with some time devoted to forces. The student's attitude was positive throughout the session. I included strategies to simplify the material. I left the student with extra practice assigned from the online learning tools."
