STAAR Tutoring review by Antonio in Round Rock, TX
The student and I covered simple algebra, trigonometry, and geometry ranging from solving for x to using SOHCAHTOA. I gave him a diagnostic test and went over it with him. He seemed to grasp and recall the material better once we did it together. I left him with eight questions from an ACT prep book that belongs to him. I instructed him to try the problems and we planned to go over them next time we meet. No concerns whatsoever.

STAAR Tutoring review by Shawn in Round Rock, TX
We focused an hour of the session on a set of 35 vocabulary words in an effort to increase the student's ability to infer, look up, and memorize more complex vocabulary words. He spent the last half hour reading a passage from a practice ACT reading section, identifying a dozen words he was not yet familiar with, and researching the words. Next week we'll return to the same section and attempt the questions.

The student and I went through a bunch of the skills for the ACT, including Using the Answers, Algebra, and Parallel Lines. Practice should help her a lot. I asked her to complete a practice test for Saturday.

STAAR Tutoring review by Miranda in Round Rock, TX
During the session with the student we worked specifically on outlining essays. I worked with her on writing one sentence per paragraph in her outlines, with the goal of getting down to key words instead of full sentences. At the end of the session I had her write out a full essay using one of the outlines we created during the session. She did a great job, the essay showed significant improvement from her first session.

STAAR Tutoring review by Alonso in Round Rock, TX
The student got his scores back today and it looks like he's improved a lot since his practice exam back in September. He had a composite of 21/22 and his strongest section was math with a 24. His weakest was science. We spent some time talking about the test he took last month and what we wanted to do in the coming weeks. His next test is in February. We did some science practice problems and talked about general strategies.

STAAR Tutoring review by Jennifer in Round Rock, TX
The student and I spent this session going over a copy of the last SAT he took. For the grammar questions, I showed him which ones are likely to show up again, so he will definitely know how to answer them the next time he takes the SAT. I also had him start a list of all the words he came across that he had either never seen before or had forgotten the meanings of. He already has a set of flashcards for the SAT, although so far unused, but I did tell him that part of the vocabulary learning of flashcards comes from actually writing the word and its definition. To make use of the already paid for cards, however, I did say that he could trace the word and meaning on the card itself if he wanted to. We had a small amount of time left at the end of the session, so I helped him answer two of the math grid-in questions that he had missed on the last SAT he took. He should have an SAT book next time, so we will work from that then.
