How can a tutor help your child master the SSAT?

The Secondary School Admissions Test, or SSAT, is a standardized test many private schools administer to help them make decisions regarding admissions and grade placement. It is offered to prospective students between the 3rd and 11th grade, and has three levels, one each for elementary, middle, and upper. The level administered is determined by the test taker's grade level. Students who take this exam will be assessed in a number of subjects, like quantitative skills, reading comprehension, verbal reasoning, and essay writing. In case your child is preparing to take this exam, try to help them get the assistance they need for success by placing them in one-on-one tutoring sessions. Session Summaries by SSAT Tutors

SSAT Tutoring review by Dana in Round Rock, TX
The student and I worked on synonyms and analogies again. Instead of doing practice problems from the book we utilized flash cards, honing in on prefixes, suffixes, part of speech, and double meanings to get the right answer. The student is doing well with analogies. She has found a strategy that works for her: describing the relationship and then applying it to possible answers to see if the relationship makes sense. This is particularly helpful with words with double meanings. She is still struggling with synonyms and I encouraged her to keep up with vocab. I also tracked all the words we had to define throughout the session so we could learn and review them. I left the list with her to study.

SSAT Tutoring review by Kayla in Round Rock, TX
Today we worked on materials for the student's math final exam for school, which consisted of a lot of the same concepts as the SSAT review we've been working on. She breezed through a lot of the sections, but got stuck on some of the algebra. I am working on reinforcing these concepts with her: isolating variables and becoming more comfortable with adding and subtracting negative and positive numbers.

SSAT Tutoring review by Katie in Round Rock, TX
We spent the first half of this session reviewing the math section that I had assigned and the problems which she had run into. They were generally of the same type--missing a vital piece of information in a word problem, or believing that a question was harder than it actually was. The only topic that she did not seem clear on was slopes and lines (which makes sense, as she has not covered this in school). We then moved back into reading comprehension, which she excelled at. She understood each of the passages exceedingly well and had no problem with the questions. Our continuation with reading comprehension will focus on question types to recognize tricks, but I am very confident in her ability in this section. I asked her to complete the second math section of the practice test, and we'll pick up next week.

SSAT Tutoring review by Hillary in Round Rock, TX
The student had worked through a practice test before I arrived, so we spent today's session going over the problems he missed in the first quantitative section. I worked through the problems he got wrong and showed him a few tips on how to solve problems more efficiently. Some of the material is new to him, but it appears most of our time together will be spent reviewing. We plan to go over verbal and reading tomorrow.

SSAT Tutoring review by Scott in Round Rock, TX
I spent one hour with each student and more or less covered the same material with each. I went over the basic structure of the test. Based on previous practice tests, it seemed the students needed the most help with the verbal section, so I focused on that. We spent some time going over effective strategies to learn vocabulary, and strategies to use in answering Synonym questions. I gave them some vocabulary words to learn for next session.

SSAT Tutoring review by Danil in Round Rock, TX
First, we went through an entire section of SSAT math problems. The student is only now learning geometry in school and needs work in finding area and solving the more complex geometry problems. The rest of the session was spent on the verbal sections, specifically the vocabulary and analogies problems.
