Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed his source summary for "King Arthur." He did a great job, but he had not yet completed his source summary for "To Kill a Mockingbird," so he completed that one. We reviewed his vocabulary exercises and marked words that he needs to focus on in his study. Finally, we reviewed the essay brainstorm/outline process, as his assignment is to write an essay, in addition to continuing with his vocabulary exercises."
"For the first hour I worked with the student on analogies. We talked about the different types of analogies and how to approach each question. I had him writing 'bridge' sentences between the words in the question and answer. He understands the logic of analogies, what he needs to work on is watching for specifics, alls, and the order in the question v. the order in the answers. For the last half hour we worked through a math test, only this time I timed him and had him pretend it was a real test (skipping problems he didn't know how to work or that were taking too long to solve). He was able to correctly answer 18 out of the 25 questions in that time limit. When we went back he managed to answer another 4 questions correctly."
"Today we looked at reading textbooks for comprehension and proper note taking. We also talked about having the student print out his PowerPoint slides for his Human Geography class. That way he is able to actively participate in the class, which I think will help him stay focused."
"Worked on a general review in preparation for the final. Topics included the SI system, dimensional analysis, reaction types, reaction balancing, chemical nomenclature, and percent composition problems."
"ACT online - solving linear equations, humanities passages (struggles: understanding more complex passages); ACT Writing practice -> Score 3 Left With: Solving linear equations worksheets, ACT writing practice"
"Today, the student started with a homework quiz on gender, articles, and some verb tenses (some passive, present, and imperative), and we reviewed it together. Then, we went through a PowerPoint on vocabulary (the airport and train station) and verbs (common endings, important verbs to know, and some past tense - passe recent and passe compose). After that, we reviewed the first section in the grammar book. For the next session, we will do a quiz on the material we reviewed today. She is doing well and is clearly a very dedicated student! She has been working hard on learning vocabulary."
