I discussed the student's rough draft of essay to be submitted Monday. He appears to have slight issues with comprehending and analyzing the text, but is headed in the right direction generally after some prompting. The student is very receptive to new ideas and ways to fix the essay, and we went through the essay collectively finding good areas and areas that need improvement. He is willing to put the work in to succeed.

The student is continuing to work on his "Balzac ... Seamstress" essay. He has plenty of good ideas, is receptive to feedback, and has his own perspective and insights. The problem is stringing all these together in a coherent manner that doesn't contradict itself. It is clear that one of our first tasks is going to be helping him learn how to narrow his focus down and then structure his essay accordingly. The more I understand how his mind works, the more effective I will be.

I started by critiquing and helping the student rewrite a paragraph he had written for homework on whether participation prizes should be given out to young athletes for just doing that: participating. He had followed the basic structure perfectly and his thesis (topic sentence) was clear and well written. I then gave him another paragraph assignment on his favorite sport and had him go through the first steps of writing: rewrite, draft, and revision. Again, his structure was quite good. We then made minor corrections together on this one. Lastly, we worked out of a grammar workbook on correct usage of commas, as this was determined to be one of the consistent punctuation errors he makes on his paragraph writing. I left him with another paragraph assignment for homework.

The first student wrote a very good opinion piece for today. In my opinion, it was her best piece yet! She was very clear and concise with her opinion and followed the instructions I gave her for writing such pieces exactly. It was very well done. We then read an example essay written by another fourth grader to get a broader understanding of writing opinion essays. The second student and I read and discussed an example essay written by another ninth grader. We discussed how the essay fit into what we have learned about writing these essays and what the author could have done better. He will write a piece about robots for next week.
