How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is administered by individual private schools. Students take the test in eighth grade, and it consists of five sections: verbal skills, reading, quantitative skills, math, and language. The HSPT also has additional optional sections, such as Catholic religion, mechanical aptitude, and science. If you want your child to attend a private school for high school, it is imperative that they perform well on the HSPT. One of the great ways to try to help them do their best is to connect them with a private tutor. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors are happy to try to help you and your child find an independent, professional HSPT tutor in Spokane.

Varsity Tutors may help you make your HSPT study sessions more productive by finding your child a tutor in Spokane, WA. Your child's private tutor may work with them on material they are struggling with, while spending less time on material they are already familiar with. This allows your child to make the most out of every study session. Your child's tutor may also give them enough time and attention that their tutor may really get to know them. This enables their tutor to analyze their strengths and weaknesses and devise a study plan that may work best for your child.

Today, we finished up the math section. We looked at the distance formula, working with negative numbers and adding, subtracting, dividing, and multiplying fractions. We also spent a bit of time looking at percentages. The student seems to have a really good understanding of all the concepts we went over and was able to answer all question with little difficulty. We also discussed some techniques to minimize time on answering a question and to quickly find answers by just sorting the information given to you.

Today was my last session with this student. He's really internalized the topics we've covered together. In fact, he's done so well that he was able to complete all the math questions in a placement exam practice test with only four errors, and none of them on geometry problems. I'm positive he is going to do very well on his exam next week.

We reviewed the math section. Topics we focused on were: percents, solving 1-step equations, geometric comparisons, non-geometric comparisons, and number manipulation problems. The student performed well overall. I gave him a percent problem as HW and assigned him to 30 minutes of practice in his workbook until our next session. Our next session will be a review as we wrap up before his exam.

This morning's tutoring session continued in the English section of the placement exam manual. The student did very well with the verbal reasoning analogies section. He was highly successful at determining the relationship between two terms and replicating that relationship between a second set of terms. After that, we started doing reading comprehension practice with multiple-choice questions based on multi-paragraph passages. Over all, he did well. Out of four or five post-reading questions, he typically got all but one correct. When he got one incorrect, it was usually due to rushing to answer before carefully considering all possible answers. This underscores the importance of reading each answer selection in order to choose the best from among several that may be true.

Today, the student and I had our first session going over the assessment exam. Overall, it seems that he'll do a much better job on it than on the ISEE, which is to be expected. We went over math for the majority of the session, and I think, with practice, he'll have the ability to do quite well. I assigned him some work for our next session.
