We completed reviewing missed/ problematic questions from the timed test the other day. The student does really well with algebra, but sometimes she doesn't see how to create the equations. We are attacking this issue from two direction: 1) systematic breakdown of the question information substituted into generalized theory equations, and 2) utilizing logic to assess values.

In this session, the student and I went over her recent practice GRE. We talked about some specific things she should focus on to increase her verbal score, including some new methods to use on the reading comprehension section. I believe that her vocabulary has increased substantially since we started working together. She will continue to study new words on her own until her exam. We talked about how she can skip some particularly hard reading comprehension passages if she finds them, how she should write down some key phrases for each passage, and how she can answer questions out of order to make the passages more understandable. She will complete another practice exam before our next session, and will try to use the strategies we talked about today.

Today, the student and I worked some more on review for the Verbal portion of the GRE. We started out by working through some Sentence Equivalence practice problems, and also some Text Completion practice problems. He tried each problem on his own first, and then we worked through the reasoning behind achieving the correct answer, and reviewed the meanings of any vocabulary words that were unfamiliar. We then moved on to Reading Comprehension practice, and discussed tactics for answering questions about the Main Idea of the passage, questions that ask you to choose an appropriate title for a passage, and questions about identifying the author's attitude/mood/tone.

The student and I just completed the math Algebra subsection in Solving Equations and Inequalities. On the Reading Comprehension side, we continued to practice on a POE strategy, which is simply going back and reviewing passages for proof. Now, we will spend some time with the Reading Comprehension. This is not only the most subtle and complicated of all three verbal subtests but also the longest to complete, so care must be taken. I will review different approaches and eventually encourage a technique that works best with the student's strengths.

As usual, the student was very prepared for our session, sending me a list of questions ahead of time from her most recent practice exam. The questions grouped roughly into three topics: proportions (and combined work), prime factors and exponents, and number properties. We discussed each question, adding in a few sample variations. At the end, we discussed Integrated Reasoning (and how it's not really integrated or reasoning). She is going to keep doing practice questions (perhaps adding a practice LSAT to drill hard CR and RC questions) in advance of our next session.
