How can a tutor help you master the ACT?

For high school students, taking the American College Testing (ACT) exam is just one step in a journey to finding the college that may help them to meet their life goals. The ACT is one of a handful of frequently used admissions exams that colleges use to evaluate whether a student may fit into their school. The standard exam has four sections, and you may choose to complete an additional writing section. Students seeking ACT tutoring in Spokane, WA, may get assistance in locating an independent tutor from Varsity Tutors.

The five sections of the ACT are English, Math, Reading, Science, and Writing, although the writing section is optional. Without the writing prompt, there are a total of 225 multiple-choice questions. Each subject area has its own set of rules for the test, and each section has a time limit. The science section is 35 minutes, the reading section is 35 minutes, the English section is 45 minutes, and the math section is 60 minutes. It could be extremely helpful to spend some study time with a tutor who might help you to prepare and answer your ACT-related questions as they come up. An expert ACT tutor in Spokane may help you to develop a study plan to make the best use of your time.

Session Summaries by ACT Tutors

Spokane, WA ACT tutoring
During this session, I introduced general concepts regarding the ACT. We talked about format, the difference between the ACT and the SAT, and broke down the requirements/structure of each individual section. I also introduced some general test-taking strategies that can be used throughout the test. During the second hour, we tackled a practice English test, going through the questions together and talking through strategies along the way. We also made a plan for the weeks to come.

Today we did a whole section of ACT math. I wanted to do a diagnostic and see what the student needs to work on. The student is very competent and understood most of what I taught her. She just needs to brush up on algebra (graphing and equations) and quadratics, and she needs to learn some pre-calc and trig. I will start with actual math lessons next time and teach her all of the concepts she needs to know for math (quadratics, cubics, setting up equations, graphing, trig and pre-calc.) She was polite and cooperative and is making good progress. I advised her to start using her practice book and do at least one section every two days.

We began with math and reviewed equation of a circle, tangents as they relate to circles, transformations, and then jumped around on questions in the practice book. We ended with science by reviewing her least favorite type of questions for science--passage based. I instructed her to approach these questions as she would a critical reading passage with annotating, etc. We tried some practice questions. I left her with this science passage to finish and some verb tense practice. We set our next two lesson times.

The student has impressively strong fundamentals in both English and Math. I want to build his confidence and stamina so that he doesn't second-guess himself when unnecessary and can streamline his test-taking skills. Because the ACT is known to squeeze a lot of material in a very tight time limit, I will do some speed drills to help him improve his pace.

The student and I focused this session on reinforcing various math concepts - with a particular emphasis on geometry. She was able to progress and become comfortable with several concepts. I have asked her to reinforce these with practice outside of our sessions.

The student expressed to me that the majority of his problems with the ACT had to do with the speed. To address this issue we took condensed versions of the math and science sections. For example, I had him take 4 sample tests of 10 questions each with 10 minutes to finish. He was very disciplined and focused for our first meeting; I was impressed. We practiced the math and science sections and focused on improving his pace when approaching these problems. I instructed him to read all the questions in each science section before he begins reading the passage. He was very easy to work with and based off his practice test scores I am very confident we will improve his score.
