Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered a number of topics in writing, followed by math -- mostly functions, inequalities, and quadratic formulas. The student has a good handle on factoring and setting up equations, so our focus was on the high-difficulty problems that require out-of-the-box thinking in terms of how to set up equations."
"The student and I worked on SAT math today. We worked through an entire SAT math test together, focusing on strategies for working through problems efficiently as she has expressed concerns about running out of time when taking math sections. I helped her realize that when a problem is getting "messy" or taking longer than it feels like it should, it's a good idea to move on to another problem and return to the problematic question at the end of the section if she has time. When she got fresh eyes on the few of these problems that we encountered, she was able to solve them with ease. We also focused on recognizing the "key" to a problem-- the feature of a problem that leads to its solution in a clean, quick manner. I noticed huge improvement in her ability to more readily recognize these, and this made her much more quick at solving SAT math problems. In our next session, she and I are going to repeat this process to continue to hone her skills and increase her confidence in her ability to work quickly on SAT math. Great job!"
"We covered essay writing again, and this time I walked the student through a complete outline for one practice essay and had him write a timed one on his own. Specifically for this session, we focused on adding supporting details to his essay writing - focusing on the "why" and the "how"s of his essay claims/positions. Compared to the previous essay he had written, this essay was significantly better in terms of defending his thesis. However, because of his additional added details, he ran out of time to fully flesh out his second body paragraph, so timing is something we will revisit the next session. Additionally, I worked with him through several sentence completion questions for Critical Reading and focusing heavily on using the process of elimination to narrow down to the correct choice even if he himself didn't know the exact word definitions of the answer choice. For the long passages practice today, I have had him defend his answer choice by underlining or highlighting a specific line from the reading that supports his choice as well as emphasizing process of elimination. He seemed to have significantly less errors today than previously. For homework, I left him with about 200 sentence completion questions as well as around 100 long passage questions to work on."
