Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We continued reading in each of the girls' books and came up with a plan for finishing the books by their deadline."
"No homework tonight, just our nightly 30min reading. The student had a few assignments and also nightly reading."
"We focused today on reading and vocabulary. In particular, we worked through how to approach new passages, both in terms of keeping track of vocabulary that's unknown as well as working through how to think about a passage (topic, thesis, type of passage, etc.). The student has a good memory for what he has read in the passage, and we are working on translating that to drawing inferences as well as figuring out how to break down what a passage is trying to explain. He has some trouble with passages that are oriented around processes and with keeping things in a logical order, which will be an area of focus in the future."
"This first session included a basic introduction of myself and the students. I asked questions about the students' strengths and weaknesses as writers were as well as their personal experiences with writing. Some overview of what their goals are were discussed. The session ended with a few assignments I was giving to the students for next session to better assess their writing. The first assignment was a list of journal prompts for both girls to complete daily. The second assignment is a basic questionnaire for each of the students to fill out to better assess their writing. The final assignment is for each student to write a basic essay answering who their favorite character from their favorite book is and why. The students and I will be reviewing this writing the next session, highlighting strengths and weaknesses."
"This focus of this session was split between two activities, the first of which involved discussing and revising the student's most recent written response to a nonfiction prose article on environmental science, and the second of which involved guiding the student through a series of exercises sampled from workbooks designed to prepare him for entrance into an accelerated learning program. The student was able to demonstrate his particular and precocious strength in synthesizing the content of more advanced reading material. The same may be said of the workbook exercises, of which those testing reading comprehension were the student's favorite. Grammar exercises from the Writing workbook also allowed an opportunity to discuss the various possible syntactic forms with which to organize a given set of related ideas."
"This invoice covers edits on the student's outline and essay as well as a session in which we went over his essay on "The Yellow Wallpaper" as well as a sample essay. We talked about integrating quotes and working towards deeper analysis. For next week, he will present an updated version of his paper."
