"The pupil finished the first practice test in the book. He raised almost every score, especially on the reading portion. His composite score was two points higher than his official test score. I gave him homework for this week."
"The student did a complete diagnostic online over break which we will go over bit by bit each session, though I asked that she still complete one in the ACT book. This session we began a math section of one test and I had her do 10 problems at a time and then go over them with me. She struggled the most with word problems. For our session this Thursday I asked her to look at and do any practice problems in the word problem section of her other prep book, and then complete the math section we started, noting how long it takes her. For next week she will try to complete the other three sections of the test and we will go through them. She is taking the test initially in February, but this is more of a practice round to give her a sense of what it's like. We will continue working after that and she will take it again, with extra times accommodations in March/April."
"Today the student and I started our ACT prep with the Math section first. We went over the structure of the test as well as the fundamentals (basic vocab like rational vs irrational, real vs imaginary, prime, factoring and multiples, etc. ) We then established a basic math strategy and started reviewing algebra concepts such as manipulations of exponents, roots, and fractions. We went over the Plugging In and Plugging in the Answers strategies as a way of simplifying math word problems. We spent the remainder of our lesson doing practice problems from the learning tools on these topics. I will be sending her some math worksheets to practice these concepts on her own time before our session this Thursday."
