Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We spent most of our time analyzing his specific strengths and weaknesses and figuring out where to concentrate for the semester. He needs help with some math concepts, so we will definitely need to work on both math and Critical Reading."
"In this session we went through several practice sections in the study guide. In the writing section we worked through problems that included verb noun agreement, tenses, prepositions, subject/object, etc. She does not struggle with these concepts for the most part. However, she will get 1 or 2 questions wrong because of the distractions present in the sentence. She is very strong in the reading section now. She understands main idea and tone very well, and she is able to answer the corresponding questions correctly almost every time. Her vocabulary is also improving, so she is answering most of the fill-in-the-blank questions correctly. The section we will focus more on now is the math section. She has come a long way in strategies and breaking down a difficult problem into manageable parts. However, she takes a bit longer to do so. So we will practice more with math from now on and spend less time in the reading and writing."
"The student and I went over the essay that he wrote on his own. I was very impressed with his writing style and mastery of grammar. It flowed well and had some strong support for his argument. We then went through the English practice tests on the website. Overall it was a great session."
"Today, we did a timed math section, and the student scored a 32. I had her complete the section backwards, as this process allows most time when working on the hard math problems that need time and has the student working on easier problems as time constraints become tighter. The process improved her performance from missing 10-12 questions to missing only 9. Of the 9 she missed, 4 were errors due to misreading the problems, so we'll work on that."
"Today, we worked on finding f(x), rearranging functions, algebraic fractions, simplifying expressions, composing functions, and quadratic functions. The student was struggling the most with simplifying expressions, and time management needs work as well. We will continue to work on these. I left her with the Pass 1, Pass 2 Strategy. The student was attentive towards the material!"
"Today, the student and I focused on the Science, Math and Reading sections of a practice ACT. He did very well on the Math section but struggled a bit on the Science and Reading sections. I'm not too worried about the Science section because he has never seen it before, and he just needs to have more experience with it to improve. We will continue to work on that. We also just need to focus more on the Reading section by helping him glean main ideas and eliminating answers that don't make sense."
"We went over right triangles, as well as cones and cylinders. The student's attitude was very positive, and she asked frequent, pertinent questions. I left her quizzes on the material we covered."
"The student and I continued work on reviewing for the January SAT exam. For homework, I had her do a full practice test on her own, and we spent our session going through each section and reviewing the problems she missed. She generally consistently scored well on Critical Reading and Writing. We talked about problems where she simply misread something or hurried through and made a simple mental error: I counted six such problems, which would make a pretty sizable score difference on her final score. I advised her to read the questions more carefully. We will have another review session on Sunday to prepare her for the SAT."
"The student and I had a great session today. We went over her homework from last week, which was looking good. We then drilled math concepts for the first hour, checked in on reading/writing (very solid on these), and practiced Science strategy for the rest of the time."
"The student and I met on Saturday and worked on reading comprehension. He had trouble on his last test with getting to enough of the questions in this section, and I think this is because he is spending too much time trying to carefully consider all possible aspects of the questions for the passage. When I meet with him on Wednesday, I will be going over some methods, including reading the questions for the passage prior to reading the actual passage, that may be able to help him work a little bit faster through the questions."
"We worked on test taking strategies for speed. We also went through concepts in math and science sections. The student struggled with time management, and when this is corrected, he will likely excel. We will continue to work on this. I left him with extra practice specifically so we could focus on problems he struggled the most with during our next lesson."
"The student and I covered all the topics she was unsure about. She knew most of them, and the topics were fairly simple. She should practice problems with all the concepts she has highlighted."
