"The student is continuing to take practice sections, this week in math and science. Her scores are improving, but she is hoping to get into the thirties, so she was a little down at the beginning of the session. As we looked over missed questions, she saw why she missed some questions right away, and on others she seemed to understand the problems once they were explained. We focused on more advanced math problems (logarithms, trig) and plane geometry. She is working really hard and making steady improvements."
"We reviewed a selection of SHSAT questions from practice exams with the student. The emphasis was on mathematics questions, although we did some select ELA towards the end of the session. My first impression has been that this student will need more focus on mathematics and we will identify shortcomings in this area. *state assessment"
"Worked with the student on the science portion of the ACT. We practiced two of the problem areas he had when he took the diagnostic. He did very well in our time and showed marked improvement as the session progressed. I shared with him the major tips for that section of the test, mainly reading the introduction for each passage/data set/experiment, then jumping directly to the question, then going back and reading the passage with the question in mind; the other tip being that, as the ACTs do not penalize incorrect answers, that guessing is a viable strategy if he has no idea of an answer but is able to narrow it down to two or three choices. The most difficulty he had was that he often rushed in reading the question and in choosing the answer. Some people are slow readers and NEED to skim, but he has the advantage of being a quick reader and the luxury of reading fully, so we worked on going a bit slower for more accuracy. For next session, I asked him to take a look at a real practice exam and go through some of it so he has an idea of what the real test will be like."
