"When I arrived, the student already had bookmarked Drills from the ISEE portion of his workbook. The first concept we worked with was finding the shaded areas/regions of a multi-shape figure. He understood that one area had to be subtracted from another but did not know how to find area of a circle. Once we went over the formula, he could solve the problems. Next, we worked with mean, median, mode, and range and probability. We also worked with several problems solving for x, which he excelled at. Lastly, he asked me to quiz him next week on some of the vocabulary words. I chose 10 of the more difficult words and asked Jack to define the word, write a sentence, and also draw a picture if necessary to remember the word."
"During our first session, the student and I went over the verbal and math sections of the SSAT Upper Level test. We went through 30 questions of the synonym section and then moved on to the math section. We made it through almost half of the math sections. He did a pretty good job on the verbal section. I'm encouraging him to take his time when reading and thinking about the questions before looking at the answer choices. I want him to know what kind of answer he is looking for before moving on to the answer choices, especially in the verbal section. He would often guess incorrectly on the synonym section but, after thinking it through, was able to come up with the right answer. I plan to continue working on the math section of the SSAT practice test and then start tackling the analogy section of the verbal part. I look forward to continuing to work with him."
"The student is in final's week and needed additional assistance in researching and studying for her history final. Her focus was on the Seven Years; War. I showed her how to do research, how to choose reliable, credible sources, condense information, and outline her writing. Although we couldn't finish her full magazine in the allotted two hours, I left her with an outline, and we discussed the connection between historical events and today's political empires to make connections."
