Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"She has recently enrolled in an ACT prep class through school, but the ACT is pretty new to her, so we spent the first part of the session talking about the subjects, structure, and scoring of the ACT. She is hoping to get at least a 25. We also worked out a schedule and a plan of what to emphasize in our sessions. We spent the rest of the session working through the math section of the first practice test. She has strong math skills and applies the correct processes quickly. It is evident that the word problems might be more of an obstacle, but once she could see how to convert paragraphs of information to equations, she solved them accurately and quickly. She is concerned about her grammar, so we are going to focus on that next week. All in all, it was a great first session."
"We finished reviewing the remainder of his English ACT work, discussing small tasks he can still do on his own to solidify his preparedness for that segment of the test. For the majority of the session, we discussed the Science portion and took a pretest to assess his strength in that test segment before we continue moving forward."
"Today was our first session, so we spent a few minutes discussing her experiences in school and her past experiences with standardized testing. She recently took the PSAT and didn't do as well as she was hoping she would. She said that reading has never been one of her strengths. We spent the bulk of the session going over the first half of the Critical Reading practice test which I had asked her to take before we met. We discussed techniques for tackling specific questions and how to go about eliminating incorrect answers if you're unsure of the correct answer. At the end of the session, we talked about the importance of developing a strong vocabulary. I asked her to go through several pages of the vocabulary section of her study book and make flashcards for some of the words she doesn't know. I also asked her to start using the SAT-word-of-the-day app on her phone."
