South Gate, CA Test Prep tutoring
The first thing the student and I did was review sections that he had done for homework. We went over various sections that he needed to focus on, specifically the middle section of writing, long critical reading paragraphs, and hard vocabulary questions. The critical reading paragraph went well. I left him a full test minus the writing section to do for practice (a few sections a day, untimed), and we set a tentative meeting for the same time next Sunday.

The student wrote a practice essay, so we looked over that and assessed it using ACT scoring rubric. It was clear, focused, and well organized, but needed more development and needed to do more to address counterarguments. He thinks he'd be able to do better now that he has more of a sense of time constraints and what qualities are assessed in the essay. We worked through missed questions on an English section and worked through some algebra problems. The plan is to focus on reading and science for the remaining weeks before the test. We will meet in two weeks because he is visiting colleges next weekend. The student is not yet getting the scores he is aiming for, but he is getting a much better sense of what the test is looking for. I am continuing to stress the importance of reading the questions and responses fully and carefully. He continues to do well with knowledge-based questions in math and English.

At today's session we went over the practice test that she took after our last session. We discussed each question and how she approached it as she did the test. She reported that she felt more in control by implementing the techniques we discussed for choosing which questions to do first. We then went through a new test, question by question, and talked about how to work on eliminating wrong answers and how to carefully read each question to avoid being misled by attractive-sounding but incorrect answers. I left her with another practice test -- she will take this one just as if it were the real ACT Reading test, giving herself only 35 minutes and marking the answers on a separate answer sheet.

We went through math problems that the student had struggled on from an online test. Then, we worked on three main types of questions that she struggled with: using the quadratic formula, finding and solving systems of equations from word problems, and data analysis. We then decided she should take two sections of math and one reading practice section test to go over for next time.

We went through SAT radicals, distance and speed problems. She was struggling with steps involved in the problems. I broke those down for her-- every step. I asked her feedback at the end of the session. I hope to perform better and improve myself. I left her with practice questions.

We went through some algebra inequality sets and applied math problems. The student is doing a great job. She is really good at inserting the choices into the problems and finding the answer is. I showed her how to translate applied math questions into mathematical equations. Also, I showed her how to solve different inequality sets and how to find the range of the set. She is doing a great job. As our practices goes, she learned how to solve these typical questions.
