Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Since this was our first tutoring session together, we focused primarily upon the structure of the actual SAT test and test-taking/test prep tips. I provided a few links for the students to look at as references so that they can use them later. I did also recommend individual study plans for this week. Since the students have only taken the SAT and took it about a year ago, I feel that they need a much more current baseline score in order to help them identify weaknesses and strengths, which will then render their studying much more effective. Thus, I recommended that each student take a full-length practice test. In addition, we are working on increasing their vocabulary. I recommended they use the flashcards they already have and learn 5 vocab words each day, totaling 35 each week."
"We focused only on math today, spending the majority of time on geometry questions that were labelled as "hard" difficulty. After every page, we stopped and reviewed his work to see where he was making mistakes. He did well in answering questions and reading questions, but he was having difficulty doing the later steps of multi-step problems and could not continue. We finished with Algebra, where he was having issues with formulas and old concepts, so we went over these again. We may have to do a focused review on concepts another time so that they can be reinforced, which could help him answer questions more accurately depending on the remaining time."
"We covered the SAT Verbal as well as Math. We reviewed questions the student got wrong on the PSAT and SAT practice test. The student needed more help with Math, particularly in Probability and Statistics, Geometry, as well as various problems that didn't fit any particular category but required logical reasoning. The student had good attitude and was receptive to review as well as overall strategy advice, work on speed, practice questions gotten wrong, etc. I will be preparing extra practice problems based on student's problem areas during the review and sending by Email."
"We worked exclusively on vocabulary today. We started with sentence fill-in exercises, but the student seems to grasp the meaning and logic and only lacks word knowledge. Using his book, we examined individual words, including how to use them, what their word roots are, and how they are distinct from similar-sounding words."
"We worked for the first 30 minutes on reviewing some math concepts that the student was still struggling with. She did very well on most of the questions, but it still having some trouble with quadratics. We will need to practice this a bit more. For the next 90 minutes, we focused on the language test by practicing her grammar and punctuation and test-taking strategies. A couple questions on the practice test were poorly written, so it led to some decent discussion between us, but overall she did very well."
"We worked in the math workbook, completing practice set 2 (systems of linear equations) and beginning practice set 3 (inequalities). For the next two weeks, the student will take the diagnostic test in the big book, read chapters 18-22 in that book, and complete reading drills 1-5 and algebra drills 1-8 in the review book."
