Session Summaries by Finance Tutors

South Gate, CA Finance tutoring
We covered Sn1, Sn2, and E2 reactions. The student had a prior problem set and got the answers back. She just wanted to know the reasons for some of the answers. It was good to see that she already understood Sn1, Sn2, and E2 reactions and had been introduced to chair cyclohexane conformations. I provided some rationale as to why an answer was either true or false, why one should expect one reaction product over the other, or why one molecule would prefer to undergo a 1, 2-H shift over the other choices. Her attitude was very good, and she didn't seem to get confused by my explanations.

The student and I did a review of -er verbs, remembering that the endings e, es, and ent are silent and are all pronounced the same way (uh). We also talked about how possessive adjectives agree in number and gender with the noun they qualify, and not so much with who owns what like in English.

Today, the student and I continued work on photosynthesis. She reported that learning the light dependent reactions in class after I had taught them to her went really well-she felt really confident with that and demonstrated this as we were going through her homework review packet. We then looked at the Calvin cycle, which she did not really understand when the teacher went through it in class. We used the whiteboard to draw out and track the movements of carbon in the Calvin cycle, and she gained a much stronger understanding of the reaction. She has a quiz tomorrow and is feeling positively about it, as am I!

For the first time today, the student tackled some SSAT-style math problems! We began by reviewing key vocabulary, including height, base, and area for geometric figures. Once she became comfortable with these ideas, we combined some algebraic thinking with finding the area of a figure to extend her further. She is always up for a challenge and enjoyed solving tricky problems! She was left with extra practice problems. Next session, we will mix perimeter and area problems with different geometric shapes.

The student reviewed her multiplication facts through the 6's. I then showed her how many of the 7's she already knew, and then we worked on 7 x7, 7 x8, and 7 x9. She was so excited to know she already knew most of them. She drew out the groups and counted the total number. We reviewed those additional 3 facts throughout the lesson, and she remembered them. We also spent time counting money on 3 cards, and she added the total amount on the board. We then spent time reading and checking comprehension. She will continue reviewing her multiplication facts, and we will begin the 8's next week. She also shared how she counted money at the science museum and the grocery store to make sure she was given the correct amount of change. She is using math in the "real" world.
