"The student and I continued to work on the math section. For today's lesson, we specifically focused on functions and equations. We talked about how functions line up with the x and y variable. We also discussed how the SAT will most likely ask him to plug additional variables into a function. The student has a pretty good understanding of these concepts. On a related note, we explored what happens to a linear equation when its slope or coefficient is changed. We discussed how these changes alter the graph's direction, its shift to the left or the right, and its growth or decrease of x-values for the same y. We will continue to work on our math review next week."
"In this session, the student and I first worked on reading. We worked on two passages of reading comprehension. She did well on questions about details from the text, relationships between ideas, and how ideas could be supported or weakened. After this, we also read and discussed four related passages similar to the long reading passages on the SAT. In all of the passages we looked at, she had no problem summarizing main ideas, and also did a good job explaining what an author most likely meant by a particular phrase or set of sentences. In the last part of the session, we worked more on the science section of the ACT. We practiced two passages involving comparing and contrasting different scientific hypotheses. Though she said that she found these types of passages harder than the other passages in the science section, she still did well in them. I also checked her timing on one science passage. She had no problem finishing reading the passage in the allotted time."
"The student and I had a good first session going over basics. Looking at where the student is, both academically and on how she'll do, I think that her goals will be vocabulary and geometry. I'm confident that she'll be able to achieve her goals for a solid score for a school."
