Social Studies Tutoring review by Jonathan in Johns Creek, GA
Today, the student and I worked on the World War I content session. We covered from Otto von Bismarck and Admiral von Tirpitz to the end of World War I and the Treaty of Versailles. We set up World War II. I used more visual aids to try to make content lecture a better session for the student. I will email a writing assignment for her to complete.

The chief focus of today was an overview discussion of the early Industrial Revolution. As such, we discussed what constitutes an "industry," why it happened in Western Europe, when and how it did, and its immediate and longer term effects on the economy of Western Europe and eventually the world. Then, we began reviewing older terms from the beginning of the course in preparation for the AP Exam.

Today was our first session. I focused on study methods that can be very effective since the student's biggest concern is with multiple choice and finding good organizing principles for the information. I emphasized finding ways of making connections between regions and time periods. We went through about 20 MC questions to demonstrate how they work and how to approach them. I will send some useful study materials and provide further guidance on how to narrow the focus to study for the test on Wednesday.

The student wanted to discuss material for a test he will have next Tuesday on Atlantic Revolutions from 1776-1820. We mainly focused on the American and French Revolutions, comparing and contrasting them. We also discussed the events of the French Revolution since he was uncertain about them. We left off by having an overview of what he should know for the test about these Atlantic Revolutions. I will be meeting again with him next Monday to further review with him for his test.

Social Studies Tutoring review by Taylor in Johns Creek, GA
This session was pretty much business as usual for the student and me. We're winding down the home stretch in terms of her study guides; luckily, with spring break coming up next week, the urgency factor on actually completing them has been reduced. As usual, during this lesson, she took notes feverishly and with admirable relentlessness while dictated from the textbook. And, as usual, I left a fair amount of the work of paraphrasing and summarizing to her so she'd be able to continue practicing zeroing in on main ideas, big-picture trends and crucial details associated with a given historical topic or event. Per her mother, she still has an outstanding grade in the class.
