Social Studies Tutoring review by Stephen in Duluth, GA
We covered, in broad terms, everything from the Neolithic Revolution to the Hellenistic period. In addition to talking about how societies formed, how city-states formed, different types of city-states, the rise of writing, and the political histories of these entities, we spent a good amount of time comparing different cultures and empires in the hopes of laying the groundwork for comparison questions that come up on the AP. We used the idea of a pyramid with a few at the top and many at the bottom as a metaphor for social structures and compared a few different societies using that method. We also discussed DBQs, and we plan on doing a practice DBQ next session. The student has a wide breadth of knowledge, but hasn't been taught many things in great detail, so I've found it useful to compare a couple different entities from different times and places in the hopes of simultaneously giving her a refresher on those while also building skills that will be useful on the AP.

The student had a seminar assignment due the following day. He had to write a soapbox speech to give on why [only] men should be the ones with the right to vote. We talked about cultural norms and historic precedent, and he ultimately came up with a speech that he shared with his class the following day.

We talked about the Islamic world and China between about 600 and 1200 AD. The student had pretty good recall, and I was able to fill in some gaps for him. He was making some good connections between places and times, which is a key skill for the AP test.

Social Studies Tutoring review by Donald in Duluth, GA
The student wanted to review material for the AP World History exam coming up in a few weeks, so we reviewed material from the first two units of the course (Early River Valley Civilizations and the Classical Period). We went over multiple-choice questions together that covered most of the material. She answered the majority of them right and gave me good explanations as to why she made the choices that she did.

Social Studies Tutoring review by Lawrence in Duluth, GA
Today we did practice questions from a practice exam. It was very fruitful because it is important to see the different ways the AP WH exam can ask a question, and to learn how to analyze the questions.

Social Studies Tutoring review by Alexandria in Duluth, GA
This session, I helped the student finish the chapter in her book on how European colonies and developing countries evolved before, during, and after WWII. The book specifically covered India, African colonies, and Latin America. While she needed help with understanding and remembering specific dates and people, she did extremely well at noticing patterns in how nationalist thought gained popularity in India and Africa. When talking about South America (especially Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil), where the patterns were different, but similar to each other, she seemed to understand the specifics better, in addition to picking up the patterns. Other than working with the book, I also helped her with the resources she had picked from the library for her research project, in looking at the index and through the books to see if they would suit her needs. Finally, we set a final plan for studying for the AP exam.
