Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I went over the social studies test with the student today. Last week when we were preparing for the test, we copied over and illustrated the first half of her notes. So I do think that we're moving in the right direction. I told her to bring home all of her social studies materials for our session on Thursday so that we can get a head start on copying over the notes for the final. I also told her to ask her teacher if she can bring a world map to the final. Finally, we went over some math word problems on dividing with fractions. She has no problem doing the math, and we worked on word problems."
"Went over his most recent article he had interest in. We wrapped up and prepared him for starting next semester."
"We continued to work on skills for relating with teachers. We also reviewed her math homework. The student has taken organization seriously and is incorporating tips that I have given her."
"I helped the student get prepped for a social studies test. We talked about how to effectively use his textbook. His teacher gives study guides with questions. We talked about writing answers in his own words, summarizing points, or adding to what the book said by filling in the gaps and making inferences."
"The student and I went over all her grades. She then completed an assignment for her composition class. We also talked about the importance of her GPA."
"We began by having the student discuss how he was doing in his classes and how he did last year. He told me he wants to improve his GPA in order to get into an apprenticeship program. I asked him how he was currently studying and how he studied last year. This year he is using a planner to write down each assignment that is due. I told him that using the planner is a very good idea, and that he should continue to use it. I also gave him some general studying tips for each subject and some ways that he can stay ahead on his work. I think that if he stays as organized and motivated as he is now, he should have a very successful year."
"We continued working on the student's Algebra today. In order to avoid her making minor errors, we've developed a new system. Every time she makes one, we erase the entire problem."
"We completed an English reading assignment and studied for the student's math test. We completed everything on our to-do list."
"We worked on the student's study skills and focused on techniques and note-taking. He seemed to grasp the concepts and is making good progress."
"The student and I reviewed material concerning the Russian Revolution in preparation for his quiz on Tuesday. We also reviewed his math homework."
"We met for the first time. I helped the student get his planner organized. We reviewed his Math homework. Then we discussed some basic studying skills."
"During today's session, the student and I worked on establishing the framework for his personal statement. We decided to focus the statement around his professional ambitions and how that school would help him realize those ambitions. To start, I queried the student about what he ultimately wanted to do. He responded that he'd like to be an architectural engineer. When I asked why, he shared a compelling anecdote about visiting his father and seeing a stunning high rise apartment complex, and thereafter wishing he could design such a building. This anecdote, we decided, would serve to introduce his statement. The rest of the session was spent devising the structure of the remainder of the statement. Points I wanted the student to address included: why beautiful buildings are valuable, why he wants to be an architectural engineer as opposed to simply an architect, and the specific ways the school would help him achieve his goal. Overall, I think the session was productive and very worthwhile."
