Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We spoke about several topics including the application process for school, the timing of the assessment, and other subjects dealing with school. Then we did some practice with Verbal passages and she did an excellent job. She is getting better at applying the strategies we have discussed and I think she will only continue to gain more knowledge with the passages and questions. For homework, I assigned her to do a practice test."
"Today we covered practice questions from the verbal reasoning section of the assessment. We used questions from a website. The student has improved dramatically in reading comprehension and test taking strategies."
"Today we went over the student's most recent verbal test full-length MCAT, on which she got a 9 on the section, which is good! We went through each question and passage specifically, talking about her map and understanding of the passage and her reasoning for picking the answers she picked. I gave her a few tips that will hopefully allow her more time for the questions that she knows how to answer/has a better chance of getting right, and leaving less time for the questions she doesn't like/passages that give her trouble and where she might have to guess anyway. I gave her a new way to study verbal instead of just taking whole section tests, so that she can get feedback on her thinking and reasoning more quickly effectively. I think that she'll keep getting consistently higher scores because her thinking process has definitely improved!"
"The student was consistently getting 9's on his practice tests and he told me that the verbal section was the easiest during his actual test. He gets his score back in a week and hopefully he receives the score he was looking for."
"We covered differentiation, enzyme pathways, bonding, aromatics, and polarity. We began by discussing two biology experimental passages, and that led to us branching out several times into adjacent areas, especially to answer the questions. His homework is to read a PDF I provided for him on the electrostatic basis of molecules and intermolecular forces. He will let me know what he wishes to discuss next."
"We covered Learning, Language, Intelligence, and Emotions. The student had some difficulty in extrapolating from the text or theories as well as memorizing some theories in the first place. The student does demonstrate an increased grasp on psychology as a whole, however. For next week, the student will complete several online questions on last week's subjects and then read the final lecture in her book."
"Today we went through the Physical Sciences section of a practice MCAT that the student took last week. We went through how hydrogen bonding affects melting point and properties of waves. Her Verbal Reasoning and Biological Sciences scores were up on this test so I'm really excited!"
"Reviewed AC Current and Electromagnetic Induction problems and did sample questions to test comprehension, then reviewed Elasticity and Fluid Mechanic problems."
"The student and I spent the first half of our session covering thermodynamics from both a chemistry and physics standpoint. She picked up the material quickly as we went. She was able to solve even the more complex discreet examples that we worked through together. I was also glad to see her MCAT math skills improving; questions that would have taken her longer to solve before are becoming much more intuitive. We also spent a portion of the session on verbal reasoning. She is slightly concerned with the timing of the section, so I gave her advice on timing and a schedule with which to practice over the next week or so. She wasn't completely comfortable with the mapping strategy taught in her prep course, so I tried to help her come up with a modified way of using the strategy."
"We went over electrochemistry for the MCAT as well as a small MCAT practice focused on general chemistry."
"We covered fluids and solids in MCAT physics, both content and practice problems. The student is improving in her ability to recognize MCAT-style answers and how to approach tough problems. With practice and some memorization of formulas, she should be able to perform well on the physical sciences section (physics at least)."
"Today we covered thermochemistry and other topics in general chemistry. We discussed student's questions about the approach to solving passages."
