Session Summaries by Physiology Tutors

Smyrna, GA Physiology tutoring
The student and I covered the TCA cycle and electron transport chain. We covered how to solve problems with carbon labeling, and what happens in each step of the TCA cycle. We covered, in great depth, the ETC. We went over the differences between substrate-level phosphorylation and oxidative phosphorylation. We discussed the mechanism of the ETC and how electrons are shuttled, the Q-cycle, and the components of each complex. We went over the reasoning for NADH yielding more ATP per unit than FADH2. We discussed how uncouplers reduce the efficiency of the ATP synthesis without affecting the ETC.

The student and I covered the topics that she will be tested on this week, including genetic material, DNA structure, and replication. The student will need to review the main experiments in this chapter (Griffith, Avery & Oswald, Hershey & Chase), the basic structure of DNA including the nucleotides, and the orientation of the strand, as well as replication. I expect that she will perform well on her exam after reviewing this material. The student should not study any material that she is already comfortable with such as constructing a new strand of DNA, given the template strand is provided, definitions, and DNA structure discovery.

The student and I covered torque, rotational dynamics, sound, and SHM for her exam on Thursday. We first started with some concepts, then branched out and did practice problems. She understood the material well. The main subject material that she needed help with was torque and axis of rotation. A tip I gave her was to use her pencil to look at rotation direction, and use the unit circle to identify positive versus negative direction. Overall, the session went well.

The student and I covered water and solute potential, surface and volume area changes in reproduction of cells (yeast), and looked over the topics that will be covered on her upcoming test. Her math skills on the word problems are great, and her rationalizing skills regarding what was being asked and how to solve the problems are impressive! She is quite obviously very bright and hardworking - I'm really looking forward to working with her more next weekend. We used her book a bit and really talked a bit about the setup of the class, style of exams, expectations from her teacher and areas where she thinks I might be able to help the most. I will be preparing more material that seems similar to the style the teacher prefers for our next session-I think she will do great on the exam and beyond!
