Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I read through two reading comprehension passages and then talked through the solutions. He is a very careful and thorough reader. After the reading passages, he worked on sentence completion exercises. We added a lot to his vocabulary. Once he knows the meaning of the words, he's great at using logic to pick the best answer choice."
"We covered the reading and math sections in the study guide in today's session. For reading, we went over how to read the passages and what to focus on when reading. We also covered strategies in answering the fill-in-the-blank questions. I suggested the student look up and study vocab words to increase the pool of words in his repertoire. He struggles more with the main idea and tone of the passages, so we will work on that some more in our coming sessions. In math we worked through practice questions and covered how to approach each type of math problem. He struggles more with starting each problem and how to approach word problems. So we will practice more types of problems in coming sessions."
"The student and I worked almost exclusively on geometry today. She attacked the geometry section with a ferocity that was inspiring, allowing us to go through multiple subjects that she had never seen before over the two hour session. Next week we will dive into the Reading Comprehension portion and touch the writing as well. I may start the session with a practice essay question under a 25 minute clock."
"The student performed wonderfully. We went through a practice test, and she did so much better on the test than she had in the past. She caught a lot of mistakes and was able to solve the majority of problems independently. Her homework is a test and to fill out a chart on the reasons for mistakes she has made. Overall, a great class."
"The student practiced the assessment exam by taking the math portion under the stress of the clock. We then went over the areas where she was not doing well. I returned her verbal assessment and covered some strategies related to the reading comprehension portion. I told her to review her answers in her book to help her understand ordering paragraphs, which was the weakest aspect of her verbal assessment."
"The student reads at a lower level than her current grade. I am working with her to bring her up to speed. Today, we worked on a practice exam together, trying to decipher the questions."
