I assisted the student as he worked through a study guide for Book 6 of the Odyssey. We located the lines in the book that were relevant to each question and discussed how best to answer. When we finished the study guide we started working on the essay that he is going to be writing on Book 5. We looked at the possible topics that he could choose. I recommended that he consider whether or not he could find evidence in Book 5 to support his assertions before he settled on a thesis. He determined that he needed to switch to a different topic for which he was able to find ample text support. He then filled out an essay organizer with the quotes from the book that he will be using as well as an analysis of each quote. We looked at the sample essay that his teacher gave him and I pointed out how the teacher structured his paragraphs so that the student was aware of how to approach writing his own essay. I pointed out that the teacher started a paragraph by making a claim from the thesis statement. He then provided context (explanation of where in the story the evidence took place), and then embedded the quote in his explanation of context, and finally provided analysis of the quote. The student marked up the sample essay to reflect what we discussed so that he can refer to it when he writes his essay.

First, I worked with Student 1 using a 6th grade resource workbook. He read 2 passages, annotated while reading, and answered the accompanying questions. He did well utilizing the strategies we've been creating together. For his writing response, he worked on two responses: one for author's purpose and the other was a summary in his own words using textual evidence. We highlighted focus areas of topic sentences, transition words, and concluding sentences going forward. He set 2 goals: improve on summarizing skills and use a higher level word choice. Then, I worked with Student 2 on a 5th grade passage (as he has advanced beyond 4th grade work). He did a good job reading a Greek myth, mapping the passage, and answering the accompanying questions. We will continue working on the writing component for extended responses, as he set a goal of using higher level vocabulary in his writing.

The student had a draft of an essay for school in which she needed to identify and analyze two rhetorical devices used in Michael Lewis' The Big Short. The essay itself was quite well written, she just needed a little help wrapping her head around the concept and purpose of rhetorical devices. Ultimately the piece that was missing from her analysis was why and how the devices that she identified accomplished their purpose, which we discussed.
