Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"After reviewing the first ACT exam and how comfortable he felt with all of the material, we decided to do some review on grammar and mechanical use. This was the section from the English portion of the exam he struggled with most, so we reviewed some grammar as well as some technicalities regarding form, verbs, tenses, and so on. Following that, we did a practice English section to apply what we had reviewed in the earlier hour."
"Today was a very good session. Having worked together before, it was easier to dive in and discuss specific topics. We began, for fifteen or twenty minutes, just by discussing the test he took last fall and where he was comfortable and what things tripped him up. From there, we began with English. We went through several specific problem sets I had made identifying different areas of English (subject-verb agreement, possessive pronouns, etc.). Then we continued with math, looking at Trig and Geometry. He did relatively well in these areas on his test, so for the next meeting I am hoping to prepare more Algebra based questions (a section he didn't do quite as well on)."
"We went over the student's Math Section. Two areas we need to focus on are Geometry and diagram based questions. I also encourage the student to be more cautious and show his work to reduce the possibility of minor errors. If he can do that, he will be in good shape since he is finishing with plenty of time. We will be covering the Reading and Science sections next time."
"We began by grading the student's homework. In the Writing and Language section, he is doing very well. We reviewed colons and semicolons. For the Reading section, I reminded him to slow down on the harder questions and reminded him that the SAT allows more time for the critical thinking questions in this section. We went over graphing inequalities, completing the square, the circle equation, and polynomials. We ended the session with reading a few SAT Writing prompts and analyzing them. I asked him to read the sample student essays for his own reference. I assigned him homework from all of the SAT areas."
"We began the session by reviewing the practice English test that the student took since our last session - she scored very well! We then reviewed algebra questions that she had and introduced and studied for the geometry section of the ACT. We had a very productive session. Before our next meeting, the student plans to complete the last few algebra problems that she has and take a practice timed math test."
"We completed a Math Review of the ACT with pacing and timing techniques. In addition, we worked on at least 20 problems in English and 2 reading passages. The student was assigned 2 additional Reading section passages, 30 problems in Math, and 20 problems in English before the next session."
