Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session we (essentially) completed the lion essay that the student had written. She wrote up the third body paragraph over the weekend, and we worked on writing a conclusion, as I explained to her some of the strategies for conclusion-writing. She learned how you should restate the thesis in your conclusion as you draw the paper to a close."
"Today, he had very little writing to discuss, so we looked over his academy test prep materials and talked about how to improve his reading strategies. His scores are low despite his high academic performance, and so his mom is concerned. We also did a brief introduction to the Science section of the assessment, since his mother is interested in having him take the assessment. His reading skills are strong; he made casual errors, but overall he didn't have trouble interpreting this information."
"Since our last session, the student had done some more work on his very detailed summary of the film NIGHT TRAIN TO LISBON. We spent the majority of the meeting going over this new material. He was challenged a bit with the difference between indirect and direct questions, so we reviewed that material. Last week, I noticed he was having a hard time with noun clauses and appositives, so gave him some material on that to review for our next session. I also sent him exercises that we will go over together when we meet next week."
"The student and I combed his paper for grammatical errors and areas where additional clarification would be helpful. In general, organization was much improved since the last draft. We got about half way through the paper and will continue in our meeting tomorrow. By the end of tomorrow's session, the paper should be in tightened final shape."
"This was the student's last session before she leaves to start college in the fall. We are saving her remaining .75 hours until she begins college, to assess her academic needs at that point in time. During this session, we reviewed an essay she had written for her Senior Thesis in high school, and we went over areas where she could clarify her thesis statement, integrate quotes and themes using transitions, and areas where she can be more specific in her writing. We then concluded the session with finalizing her resume, and highlighting ways that she can modify it and build on it throughout her college career."
"We reworked the student's book review rough draft. I left him my email if he would like to send it to me for further edits."
