Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"First we worked on the student's school homework, which consisted of incorporating vocabulary words into sentences. She did pretty well with this, although struggled with the meanings of a couple of the words. Then we reviewed her multiplication and subtraction flash cards. She is doing so much better on multiplication. We then went over the spelling words we have been generating incidentally. We reviewed a composition she had edited and written in cursive. We made some corrections in form with the cursive, but she did a great job in her editing. I gave her a rough draft composition assignment for our next session. Finally, I gave her several long division problems. She is doing better with these."
"The student and I reviewed his math homework, which consisted of subtracting fractions by finding the LCM of the denominators. We also worked on spelling and vocabulary."
"We covered Multiplication tables and Plot. The student is an extremely intelligent young girl with good concentration and focus."
"The student and I worked on editing and completing his final copy of an essay we started last week. We also completed his math homework for the week. We took a little bit of time to organize his materials for the week and to make a plan for the coming days. I also was able to spend some time talking with his mom about how he is doing in school."
"The student showed strong focus and interest in his all about me game project. He demonstrated the writing skills of considering his audience, word choice, and author's voice (coming across as himself on the page) during our work session. My goals were to help him simplify his game idea and get as much of it recorded as possible. We created 15 item cards and a monster card for each of the elements he planned for. Next steps -- create the character cards for the 5 characters that the players can choose from. Create more monsters, particularly in the elements that the characters are strong or weak against. Begin to collect images for the cards. Make a mock up both to consider aesthetic choices (colors, size of each square, layout, etc.), and to play test (particularly to see if the turns are a good length and if the monsters are too easy or hard to defeat). Looking forward to next week."
"The student's homework was over using different methods of estimation. She finished her 20 problems in 50 minutes. We talked about how estimating should be easy to help us know if we get a correct final answer. We should be able to do the problem in our head or easily on paper. "
